First, I would make and exercise a disaster recovery plan to answer questions like, with their normal computer systems unavailable, would the entire workforce be able to use pen and paper for all their work? Can they run their production lines manually? Can critical payment functions, such as payroll, treasury, and reporting, maintain business as usual operations? Do they know how to shut down the network and servers to avoid any further spreading of the malicious code? Can they restore their data through trusted backup servers, and would they be ready to use emergency forms of communication? The next thing I would do is prompt a conversation with senior decision-makers and ask them to decide in advance whether or not they would pay a ransom to restore systems.
