How to Purchase an Unlocked iPhone

When you purchase an iPhone at Apple, you’ll receive an unlocked model that you can use with any carrier. The only exception is if you purchase an iPhone through AT&T Installment Plans — you will receive a locked model.

Using eSIM

You can check if your carrier supports eSIM here(Opens in a new window).

You can activate an unlocked iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later that you purchased in the United States with over 400 carriers who support eSIM on iPhone, in 100 countries and regions all over the world. Contact your carrier to confirm that they support eSIM on your cellular plan.

For AT&T or T-Mobile customers, you’ll activate your new iPhone by following a few simple steps on screen when you set it up.

For Verizon customers, you’ll verify your carrier account before checkout, and your new iPhone will be ready to activate when you receive it and start setup.

Have a different carrier? Choose “Connect to any carrier later” and easily set up your service once you receive your new iPhone.

Store Pick Up Procedures

Wireless carriers have guidelines for who can pick up a contract iPhone order.

An iPhone upgrade or replacement on an existing wireless service contract can be picked up by the primary account holder or by a person authorized by the account holder. Please contact your carrier to verify authorized users.

An unlocked iPhone (one without any carrier contract) can be picked up by the purchaser or a designated pickup contact.

To pick up your iPhone in an Apple Store, the primary account holder or the authorized user will need to bring the following:

  • Card used for payment or Order Number
  • Valid photo ID

If your photo ID does not match the billing address on your account, please bring a second form of ID (for example, a utility bill) with the correct address.

Service Cancellation

Wireless carriers have different service-cancellation policies. Returning your iPhone may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account; you are responsible for your wireless service agreement and for any applicable fees associated with your wireless account. Please contact your provider for more information.
