Opera 18, our latest browser for desktop, comes out today!

Opera 18 is out today. When you turn 18 years old in Norway, you are finally allowed to drink beer and wine, but since it’s Tuesday, we’ll wait with the wine until Friday.

More importantly, here are the new features of Opera 18.

Camera and microphone

Support for WebRTC (camera/microphone API). This means that you can use your desktop’s camera and microphone in HTML5 applications and games. Want to try it out now? Go and see how it works!

Move tabs between windows

Now you can drag and drop tabs betweens windows. If you drag a tab out of browser, it will turn into a brand new window.

Custom search engines

Simply right click on a search engine and add it to your list of custom search engines. For example, you can add Dictionary.com so you can easily access a dictionary right from your address bar.

    “If you have any feedback that you want our Desktop Team to read, head over to the comment section in our Desktop Blog (link)” -> Something’s missing here. :)

    Thank you for releasing 18 today! :)

    • MagnusPeter

      Fixed! Thanks for noticing :)

  • Tomasz Borychowski

    Does it have real bookmarks yet?

    Has Linux been abandoned as an Opera platform?

    • Onaj Tamo

      No.But they are as secretive as the NSA about it.

      • Andrew

        I really do feel they have turned their backs on the linux community. We were told when Opera 15 came out that we would only have a short wait. We have heard nothing since and now we are at version 18.

        Says everything.

        • http://my.opera.com/haavard/ opvard

          No, we have kept saying that we’re still planning to release on Linux. We just don’t have a specific release date.

          • Onaj Tamo

            Can you at least give us an unspecific release date then?

    Is it possible to somehow eliminate the key shortcut alt + space on OS X? it’s probably the main reason I’m not using Opera as a default browser.

    • http://jjgod.org/ Jiang Jiang

      That keyboard shortcut is customisable. It defaults to Option (Alt) + Enter and Command + Home on Mac. But you can customise it by modifying `~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera/Preferences` and add the content of https://gist.github.com/jjgod/7549510 right after the first `{`. Quit Opera before doing that.

      • http://niloque.blogspot.com/ NiLok

        added that and Opera is creating a new Preferences file, renaming the modified to Preferences.bad. any suggestions?

        • http://jjgod.org/ Jiang Jiang

          Sorry I added a wrong , after the last but one }, it shouldn’t be there. It’s in JSON format so it’s sensitive to any invalid changes. The block should be after the first {. Let’s say it used to look like:

          {
          "browser": {
          "window_placement": {
          "height": 1286,
          "left": 266,
          "top": 22,
          "width": 1247
          }
          },
          ...
          }

          Then it should now look like:

          {
          "Keybindings": {
          "Basic": {
          "Homepage": [ "Command+Home" ]
          }
          },
          "browser": {
          "window_placement": {
          "height": 1286,
          "left": 266,
          "top": 22,
          "width": 1247
          }
          },
          ...
          }

          • http://niloque.blogspot.com/ NiLok

            I decided to configure Opera from scratch and then add the code you provided and now it works fine – the alt+space shortcut doesn’t work. Opera behaves as if I just pressed space only. Thanks! :)

            btw, will I need to change the Preferences file again after I download any update for Opera?

          • http://jjgod.org/ Jiang Jiang

            Nope, new Opera updates won’t overwrite your personal Preferences file.

          • http://niloque.blogspot.com/ NiLok

            great. :) another question, if I may… is it not possible to remove the default search engines or at least change their key shortcut?

          • http://jjgod.org/ Jiang Jiang

            No, I don’t think that’s customisable yet.

  • qwertyuiop

    Can I import bookmarks, history and tabs from other browsers, including older versions of Opera? If I can, I will change to Opera, otherwise I will continue stuck to IE!

  • http://civalin.bitbucket.org/ Civa 雪凡

    Linux please~

    • http://my.opera.com/haavard/ opvard

      Yes, we’re still planning to release on Linux. Don’t have a date yet, though.

  • Ramdziana F Y

    More smooth font on Opera 18? I feel it ..

  • http://www.operaturkiye.net/ Mağruf Çolakoğlu

    Thanks.

  • Andrea Doria

    For many years I use Opera browser. Unfortunately, the new version has a fatal error. If I download something and accidentally close the browser, I get no warning that my download will be canceled. After many years I have to change my browser.

  • lossnei
