Shailesh Prakash, VP of News at Google, sat down with TV presenter and documentary filmmaker, Barbara Serra at the International Journalism Festival #IJF in Perugia. Here are our takeaways: Journalists are in charge. AI-based technology can enhance a journalists’ work - not replace it. The journalist and editor must be in control of editorial decisions when using generative AI tools and make the choice about what content to use or not use. Innovative newsrooms are putting AI to work. Journalists and editorial teams are looking for ways to thoughtfully and intentionally bring AI into the newsroom; from transcribing interviews, and producing summaries of large documents, to helping brainstorm headlines. Starting today, journalists in Europe will have early access to Pinpoint, Google’s product for investigative journalists, including new AI features. Check it out here -> g.co/pinpoint If you tuned into the discussion, what were your takeaways?

The panelists shared the findings of a UNESCO project to define and implement standards of excellence in journalism education across the African continent. The project, supported by the GNI, involved 80 journalism schools collaborating across 37 African countries, to define the criteria for excellence in journalism, examine existing teaching programs, and then provide 10 grants to schools to develop to implement innovative education projects. Nazarene Makena, from Tangaza University College in Kenya, who’s project focused on strengthening environmental journalism education, noted that they are ‘preparing students to be entrepreneurs and journalists’. While Fitih Alemu, lecturer and project lead from Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia, discussed bringing a gender sensitive approach to conflict reporting. Fitih commented that the ‘traditional curriculum was not catching up with what journalism is going through today.” If you tuned into the panel, what were your takeaways? 📰In 2022, French publisher Libération (“Libé”) worked with Google News Initiative to convert readers into paying subscribers. 📊 With Libé’s house-built datawall, non-subscribers share their email addresses to access premium articles. They then receive top articles, newsletters, and subscription offers. This helped Libé acquire 35K email addresses — an increase of 83%. 📧Libé’s “share with a friend” feature lets subscribers email articles to non-subscribers to view in their inbox on the publisher’s website. This helped Libé acquire 26K email addresses – an increase of 17%. 📈Overall Libé has grown subscribers 15% over the past 12 months.
