music just starts playing automatically on my iPhone

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3 - not subscribed to Apple Music.

Frequently, when the phone is linked to some source like home pod mini or CarPlay or a speaker or something, it just spontaneously decides to start playing music l, usually starting alphabetically by the title of the song.

I have searched online and found suggestions like this one https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/stop-apple-music-from-automatically-playing#

which says:

How to disable Autoplay in Apple Music is explained here and applies to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch:

  1. Select a song in the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. After clicking on the mini player, tap on "up next"and look for the Autoplay icon (the infinity symbol).
  3. To turn off the Autoplay feature when it is turned on, tap the Autoplay icon.
  4. The Autoplay playlist should instantly disappear if the process is successful, and Apple Music will stop playing music on its own.

but when I try to follow these directions I get stuck at step 3 because I cannot find any autoplay infinity symbol icon that can be turned off.

help! This is really annoying. I hate it when my devices decide to do things without my asking it to.

This certainly seems to be an intentional act by Apple to force us to listen to Apple Music rather than their competitors. No auto play icon on my iphone14promax. This is beyond irritating, frustrating and insulting for Apple to do this. I am getting sick of their efforts to control and monopolize.

I tried both disabling the infinity symbol and changing the settings to Automatically Airplay Never. Neither fixed the problem. Apple Music always starts playing. I've also had it start playing music after using AirPods on a phone call and removing the taking the AirPods. This is really annoying because I don't use Apple Music.

At last a solution that works - no infinity symbol but this does allow you to disable automatic air play when you connect to your car - 8 hours of searching and bingo - thanks

the link above explains the action:

go to settings/airplay & handoff/automatic airplay and set to ask and bingo - I did reboot the phone and the car and it worked perfectly

I realize there are ppl here with different issues, but the core issue of unwanted auto play with no infinity symbol to toggle off does happen regardless of Bluetooth connectivity.

For example, if I am watching a twitch stream and whether I’m connected to a Bluetooth device or not, if I take a call or visit a separate app that uses mic or speakers (like the camera for video), when I exit the secondary app, instead of resuming my stream or other media, it auto plays Apple Music instead of the media I was playing resuming.

This is certainly intentional on apple’s part as (from what I’m seeing and reading) they don’t provide the infinity symbol toggle to ppl who don’t subscribe to Apple Music, and it activates whether the Apple Music app has been opened by the user or not.

For me, it is an intermittent problem, so I’m not certain of every parameter that is in play. While it may not be Apple’s express intention to “make” someone listen to or use Apple Music, it certainly functions to highlight how their native apps are synchronized with the operating system and ease of use features. Combined with the general human inclination to take the path of least resistance, it is not out of the question to attribute this issue to purposeful design on apple’s part, or to resent having the choice taken from you, when it is clearly available to others, or was available in the past.

You would think Apple would come on here and at least tell us that there’s no way to fix this!!! You think they would at least tell us something? Instead of just leaving us completely in the dark! My next phone is an android!!! I’ve been with Apple iPhone since day one in 2007.

This forum is made up of users like you. Apple will not come on here and tell you anything. You do have the option to Contact Apple directly to see if there is a different solution.

Since your next phone is going to be an Android, this is a heads up for you so you are not disappointed. It does not matter the device and the same thing happens on Android.

If you have read any of the posts here, you will realize it has nothing to do with the device. The problem is that the radio in your car has no way to Play/Pause Bluetooth music. If it did not start playing when it was connected, the radio would not be able to start playing the music. You will notice that when you switch the source of the music from Bluetooth to FM on your radio that the music continues on your phone and only stops when it gets disconnected from Bluetooth. Again that is because the radio has no way to Play/Pause music on Bluetooth. All the phone can do is start playing on connection and stop when it is disconnected. This keeps the device hands-free so you are not starting and stopping the music on the phone.

The shortcut below works by pausing the music on a Bluetooth connection. This will work with the downfall of when you do change your radio to listen to Bluetooth music, you will need to start the music on your phone manually since it has been paused. That is not necessarily hands-free and may be why it is not included on every device.

Very unfortunate but I deleted Apple Music app even though I have purchased a significant library over the years. Super annoying that Apple Music always opens when connecting to BT or earbuds. This has been a long time coming for me deleting it I suppose. It’s been so annoying that it’s prevented me for years using my phone as much as I’d like in vehicles… which led to me never using Apple Music…you want to try to force me to use it?…made me 100% not willing to try anything associated with a subscription through it EVER but instead become happy with other company’s services. Get out of your own way Apple.

Today, there is no infinity symbol. Since most recent upgrade Apple Music starts up every time. In the car this is the worst, because I do not want music while I am driving. I have downloaded John Cale’s 4’33” which is 4 minutes 33 seconds of silence. It gives me time to close the app with no music. I have it on auto repeat, so it is the only song that comes up. Next step will be to delete Apple Music.

This is just the way bluetooth audio works in vehicles. You will find the same thing happens if you use Spotify instead of Apple Music and is the same for Android devices as well. Nothing to do with Apple forcing you to listen to Apple Music.
