I always loved that scene in the Matrix where Neo learns Martial Arts by installing the skills into his brain from a computer. I love learning and self-improvement, constantly on a quest to better myself. If only it was as easy as installing some software update… VR provides the most immersive learning environment and I knew it would be incredible for my development. When I wanted to learn Spanish, I wanted a virtual immersive experience that would walk me through the process, so at the end, like Neo, I could say, “I know Spanish”. It didn’t exist. So 5 years ago, I recorded my first Spanish lessons in 360 and created a mini-Spanish VR program. I wanted to film an authentic learning experience with real people so anyone can have a (simulated) lesson with a talented teacher at any time. The 5 Spanish lessons are great but they were a prototype. Just a taste of the potential of the technology. Life and pandemics got in the way and I shifted my attention to other 360 video projects. I love the medium and creating compelling 360 content is my idea of fun. But… I always wanted a longer immersive journey that took you deeper into a language and culture. Where you would foster connection with real people and form long-lasting memories. My wife and I decided that Japanese and its culture was the perfect next project. The dream was to create a training program to install in your brain via VR experiences so you’d finish being able to speak Japanese. You progress through a series of filmed lessons and interactions with real people, supported by speech recognition, as well as cultural Trips around Japan. Once you complete this program, you are able to have confident conversations in a new language. You exit VR and declare, “I know Japanese”. I think we’ve done it. We’ve had a lot of help from amazing teachers, colleagues, and actors who we’re incredibly grateful to. I cannot wait to show the VR community what we’ve done. It’s launching in less than two months. You can join and learn a new language and culture to enhance a future trip and make new relationships. For November only, you can sign up for four months ($99) and get four months free.
