What do you do if your Change Management strategy is not keeping up with the latest innovation trends?

In some ways is it keeping up or catching up? Recognizing where you are, what and how you want to change, heading towards YOUR future. Take a look around, at your team, at your competitors, how the market is changing and map the gaps you would 1) like to bridge, 2) realistically able to bridge and 3) what would it take in time, commitments, and costs. All gaps are NOT equal, rank them, decide what gives you the pathway and structure to the changes you want- direction?, catch up? etc. What needs to be put in place, over what period- longer than you initially think, discuss it, reassess what you found out and bring that into a framework for action and begin. Adjust as you learn to improve your pathway

In my experience, there are typically 2 types of triggers that initiate the need to revise processes: 1) Quantitative - the easy type, where a focus on ensuring all the relevant data related to the health of a process and the status of the objectives of change will indicate whether the current process is serving well or not And 2) Qualitative - the harder type, and the one easy to overlook, more related to energy, morale, mood and motivation. This relies on connection with people, pulsing the energy of individuals and teams, being open to signs of passivity and the slowing down of momentum, and the ability to correlate technical and business performance to human factors If these are factored in correctly, prices change is easier.

Sometimes, it's not necessary to follow the trend. Sometimes, you've got to be the one to create a new one:) Stop and think. If it worked for some, doesn't mean it will work for all. That too - Everytime.

Be mindful of the trap of the shiny object. Every change comes with a price, not only for investment, but also learning curve, team engagement, change fatigue and other sunk cost. Before correcting course ask yourself: - Is the value of this new innovation bigger than the cost or course correcting? - What is the time delay to ROI due to this course correction? Is it worthy? - Is the organization ready for a bigger leap or need smaller change steps to successfully get there? - Does this fits better your long term startegy?

Latest trend data may not be always applicable to your organisation. At best it can be used as base for making tailor made changes for your own

Stay the course. Technological trends are happening at breakneck speed, and while maintaining agility and flexibility is important, no change initiative can pivot at every new opportunity. Stick to your original change management plan and remember the 80/20 rule. There will be another opportunity to strategize and plan new change initiatives; finish what you started first.

Unlike technology, people often assume that change management is an area that is tried and tested and the standard theory (e.g. Kotter, Llewyn & Cooper, ADKAR, etc) are universally applicable in most situations. In reality, there is a lot of innovation in Change Management, especially the change psychology and human centric change management areas, among many others. Recently there is a rise in software implementations factoring in change management in various ways as well. So it is very important that as practitioners especially, we stay connected to academia, research, publications, toolsets and software, communities and forums. This will help us bring awareness within our organisations or consulting engagements.

The change management strategy needs to be flexible enough to accommodate further changes as and when they take place There needs to be some additional space for such possibilities.This include structural and other minor changes.

For instance, in my role as a project manager, I realized our change process was slowing down our adoption of new technologies. We were still manually tracking changes while our competitors were using AI-powered tools. I brought the team together for a brainstorming session where we pinpointed areas for improvement. We then researched and piloted a few cutting-edge change management platforms. By involving the team in the process, we were able to select a tool that automated our workflows, improved visibility, and enabled us to innovate faster. The key is to continuously evaluate your strategy, seek input from your team, and be willing to pivot when needed. Change management itself must be agile in the face of rapid innovation.
