What is the difference between a rifle magazine and a rifle clip?
Even though “clip” and “magazine” are often used interchangeably, this is incorrect, and can cause groans from some gun-sticklers out there. The difference between them is pretty simple though. A rifle magazine is a spring-loaded device that holds ammo and feeds cartridges into the weapon’s chamber so that you can fire them. A rifle clip is a device that loads rounds into a magazine, usually an internal magazine. A common example is with the classic M1 Garand, which uses a “stripper clip,” a small device that holds up to 10 rounds. You push the clip into the top of the rifle’s magazine. When you fire the last round, the clip is automatically ejected.
How many magazines should you have for a rifle?
There is no set number of rifle magazines you need, although there are some guidelines to help you determine the best number for you. For example, if you have an AR 15 or similar tactical carbine, most people recommend at least three AR 15 magazines. Within this, you can choose between heavier stainless steel magazines and lighter polymer magazines, but each type works well. For other rifles with smaller magazines, like an SKS or Ruger 10/22, you may want to have a few more rifle magazines. Since these generally only hold about 10 rounds, having extras makes reloading easier during your trips to the range.
Do AR 15 magazines fit all AR 15s?
As long as the calibers for the rifles are the same, the rifle magazines should be interchangeable. However, you have to be careful with different calibers. For example, a .300 AAC Blackout magazine looks the same as a .223 Rem or 5.56x45mm NATO magazine, and the magazine for a .300 BLK might even fit in one of these other receivers, but the ammo won’t sit correctly in the magazine or feed properly.
