Learn how Google services change when supervision is added to a Google Account for a child under 13 (or applicable age in your country)

Once you add supervision to your child’s Google Account, the way that they can use some Google services will change. Google services and supervision may work differently for children over the age of consent. Learn more.

Ad personalization

Google won't serve personalized ads to children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). Your child will still see ads while using Google's services. These ads might be based on information like:

  • The content of the site or app your child is looking at.
  • Their current search.
  • Their general location (such as city or state).

Tip: Google won't personalize ads to children before they reach at least the applicable age in their country. Children who had supervision added to their previously existing Google Account will be able to adjust settings to control the ads they see once personalized ads are available to be served to them.

Apps with account access

Parents can help manage their child’s ability to give third-party apps and sites access to their account. Learn more.

Google Assistant

Children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) can’t use these features with Google Assistant:

  • Play songs from YouTube Music
  • Make purchases
  • Use non-Google actions
    • Children can only use these actions if they have the "For Families" badge.

Parents can block access to Actions for Families.

Google Fit

Some Fit features will work differently for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country).

On child accounts:

  • Fit won't use location data or create maps for workouts or activities.
  • Fit won't save heart rate data from a smartwatch or other device.

Google Maps

Contributions to Google Maps are not intended for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). Any photos, ratings, reviews and accompanying text, and questions and answers your child may have contributed to Google Maps will be unpublished from Google Maps and deleted. Any public lists your child may have posted will be unpublished from Google Maps, but will remain visible to people who have access to the applicable link or have followed the list, unless your child deletes the list. Learn more

Google Pay

Google Pay is not intended for use by children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). If your child has an existing payments profile, it will be closed.

Once a payments profile is closed, a child can no longer:

  • Make purchases through Google Play's billing system and other Google products (except with a family payment method).
  • Send and request money with Google Pay and Gmail.
  • Store gift cards, loyalty programs, and payment information.
  • View their transaction history.
  • Trade in a phone at a Google Store or get credited/refunded for trade-ins that are still in process.
  • Make purchases via Google Assistant.

Important: All individual and family subscription services purchased by your child from Google will be canceled. If your child has an iOS device and has purchased a subscription, you must cancel it via the Apple subscription settings.

Any outstanding balances must still be paid. Children can still use credit cards and loyalty program cards that were previously added to their Android devices for in-store purchases. In order to prevent your child from using such cards, you can remove them directly. Learn more.

With permission from the family manager, children can still make eligible purchases using the family payment method. Learn more.

Google Photos

For the most part, Google Photos will be the same for children as it is for adults. The primary difference for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) is that Face-grouping will be turned off, so children can't search for specific people in their photo library. Learn more.

Google Play

Important: All children’s individual subscription services from Google will be canceled.

A child under 13, or the applicable age in your country or region, cannot manage their own payments profile. If your child has an existing payments profile, it will be closed. Your child's Google Play credit (not including promotional Play balance) will be transferred to their family manager's account. If any issues occur, you can request a transfer of Google Pay credit with this form. Your family manager must have an open payments profile in order to complete the transfer. Learn how to manage your payments profile.

If your child already has a Google Play profile, approval on Family Link won't disrupt their logged-in experience. Your child’s Google Play profile will stay signed in to current games and will automatically sign in to new supported games. Not all games support automatic sign-in with a Play Games profile for supervised Google Accounts. Their profile may have other restrictions, such as the ability to add in-game friends. Learn more about your child’s supervised Google Account.

Location History and Sharing

Location History

Location History is not intended for use by children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). Location History will be turned off for your child and their history deleted. New location information will no longer be saved to your child’s Location History. Settings for other location services on your child’s device, like Google Location Services and Find My Device, aren't changed. If the Location setting on your child’s device is set to On, some location data may continue to be reported to Google to provide services such as Location Sharing and may be saved in other settings, like Web & App Activity, as part of their use of other services, like Search and Maps, and included in photos depending on the settings for the camera app.

Location Sharing

In Maps, children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) can only share their real-time location with their parents. Learn more.

Nest familiar face

Home members in the Home app who are under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) will no longer be able to:

  • Open familiar face detection settings.
  • Access the familiar face library.
  • Turn on familiar face detection for a new camera with a Nest Aware subscription.

YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube TV, & YouTube Kids

Children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your country) can’t use YouTube TV at this time. Once your child’s account becomes supervised, they won’t be able to use this service. If your child previously used YouTube features or these services, you can download the data related to their account within 30 days after the account becomes supervised. After 30 days, you lose all data and content on your child’s account. The data can include YouTube videos, channels subscriptions, comments, live chats, posts, playlists, and stories.

Tip: You can decide if your child can access supervised experiences on YouTube and YouTube Music. Your child won’t have full access to YouTube, but you can choose the content level they can access.
