Google Maps & your child's Google Account

Google Maps is available for children with Google Accounts managed with Family Link.

How Google Maps works

For the most part, Google Maps will be the same for children as it is for adults. If your child is under 13 (or the applicable age in your country), they won't be able to do things like:

  • Contribute content including photos, ratings, reviews and accompanying text, and questions and answers
  • Publish public place lists
  • Add or edit places on the map
  • See a timeline of places they’ve been

Location sharing in Google Maps

It’s possible to share your location with others in Google Maps. To manage whether your child can share their location, you can turn your child’s location settings on or off.

Children under the age of consent

Children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) whose accounts are managed with Family Link can only share their real-time location with their parents.

Any other real-time location sharing from Google Maps will be turned off if supervision was set up for an existing account of a child under the age of consent.

A child won't see where they went with their devices, or get recommendations based on visited places.

Children over the age of consent who had supervision added to their existing Google Account

Children over 13 (or the applicable age in your country) can share their real-time location with their parents and others.

Parents can stop future location sharing for their children by turning off device location settings.

When children can turn off location sharing

Children over 13 (or the applicable age in your country) who had supervision added to their previously existing Google Account can stop location sharing at any time. They can do this by stopping supervision or, depending on their supervision settings, by turning off Location History.

Important: Children whose parents provided consent for their child's continued use of their Google Account cannot stop supervision until they reach the applicable age and choose to manage their own account.
