They then shift the conversation to the topic of Greg Locke, a controversial pastor who has been declared an apostle by his wife and other pastors. They discuss Locke's extreme views and the dangers of Christian nationalism. 259. TNE TALKS: Building Bridges with Our Enemies// John Pavlovitz
Summary
John Pavlovitz, author of the book, Worth Fighting For: Finding a Faith That Makes a Better Human, discusses his journey from being a conservative evangelical pastor to a more progressive Christian ethos. Tim and John discuss the tensions between personal convictions and pastoral expectations, the challenges of navigating relationships within the church, and the importance of humanizing people in the midst of political differences.
Takeaways
Many people within conservative evangelical communities feel torn between their convictions and the community they love, making it difficult to navigate their beliefs and relationships.
It is important to humanize people and remember that individuals within the Christian nationalist movement are not a monolith. There is diversity of thought and experience within these communities.
Dehumanization is a dangerous path that can lead to violence, and it is crucial to maintain empathy and respect for others, even in the midst of political differences.
Authentic dialogue, empathy, and compassion are essential in bridging the divide and fostering understanding between different theological and political perspectives.
Navigating relationships with people who hold different beliefs requires curiosity, understanding, and respect for their journey.
Being a progressive Christian involves the challenge of maintaining relationships while advocating for systemic change.
Unity, empathy, and humanizing the conversation are essential for moving forward and creating a more inclusive society.

Cultivating a Community of Love and Diversity
Thank you Tim for creating a space where exploration of the house of the Christian tradition is encouraged. Too often in my own experience I have seen what should be taken as a lane change within the tradition be treated as an exit ramp. Suddenly people find themselves being told that they can’t live a life of faith and love for Jesus and the world because they can’t justify the idea that, for example, God who is Love will torture people for an eternity. It is a shame, because there have always been rooms in the Christian tradition that, for example, teach apokatastasis or use a spiritual reading of a text that seemed prima facie to feature a sub-Christlike portrait of God (e.g., Old Testament violence). It is a shame because rhetoric that attempts to boot people out of Christianity for their violation of historically idiosyncratic constructions of “orthodoxy” hurts people and tethers love of Jesus to opinions which, in reality, a Christian may accept or deny. Keep up the charity and integrity of your discourse; it is desperately needed.
5 stars for the Rosario Butterfield episode
Truly an important conversation
Keep Exposing the Outrageous Fundamentalist Leaders
I appreciate your programs, including those that expose the twisted thinking and fundamentalist nonsense from Evangelical/Fundamentalist leaders like what you quoted in the 5/3/24 TNE Friday podcast with Tim and April. These errant evangelical fundamentalist leaders need to be held to account for their disgraceful claims, teachings, and “prophecies.”
