Several legacy Mean Girls stars had a 20-year class reunion on Monday.

At the New York City premiere of the new movie musical reimagining of the 2004 comedy, Lindsay Lohan made a surprise appearance, posing with writer and costar Tina Fey, producer Lorne Michaels and the young new cast.

Other North Shore High School alums in attendance for the red carpet included Daniel Franzese, who played Damian two decades ago. He told PEOPLE at the premiere "we all want" to make a sequel. He added of his former costars, "We all talk when we can. It's very difficult. We were all really busy, but I love them also.”

The O.G. Kevin G, Rajiv Surendra also showed his support at the event, wearing a mathletes letterman's jacket as a nod to his character, played by Mahi Alam in the new version.

"So honored to be a part of the new @meangirls movie premiere tonight! Congrats to the new cast, y’all did a fantastic job!" Surendra, now a YouTube chef, wrote on Instagram.

It's not the first original Mean Girls reunion in recent months. Back in November, Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and more reprised their characters in a commercial for Walmart.

One person who was missing? Rachel McAdams, who played Regina in the original film and said in a recent interview with Variety that she “didn’t know that everyone” — including Lohan, 37, Seyfried, 38, and Chabert, 41, as her fellow “Plastics” — was participating in the ad.

“I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my Plastics,” said McAdams, 45. “But yeah, I found that out later.”

As for not being part of the new movie, McAdams said she and Fey "sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end."

"I think the direction it went in will be fantastic, and I cannot wait to see it," she added.

The new movie musical stars Angourie Rice as Cady, Reneé Rapp as Regina (reprising her Broadway role), Auli'i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Anantika as Karen, and Bebe Wood as Gretchen.

Rice, 23, told PEOPLE at the premiere that Lohan's "performance in that [original] movie is, is one of my favorites. It's so iconic. It's so nuanced and detailed. I just went into it hoping that this performance would add to the legacy of Cady Heron that's very different."

Cravalho, the voice of Disney's Moana, added that she was "1000% nervous" about stepping into the beloved Mean Girls world.

"I'm a friend and a fan of the original, and I'm not looking to remake the perfection that is Mean Girls from '04," said Cravalho, 23. "But when Tina Fey is a part of a project that is a re-imagination of Mean Girls that also incorporates music from the Broadway musical, my little theater kid was over the moon. I was so excited to be a part of this."

Fey, 53, announced she was adapting the Mean Girls musical into a movie musical in January 2020; the movie officially unveiled its cast in December 2022.

In February 2023, Fey revealed that she and Tim Meadows, who played Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall in the original film, would reprise their roles.

“It was about: How do we do the best of the musical, plus the best of the original?” Lorne Michaels, who produced both the original film and the new movie, told Entertainment Weekly in December of the new Mean Girls. “It isn’t a remake, it’s a new interpretation. It feels like a familiar enough story, but it’s for today.”

Mean Girls is in theaters Friday.
