I love how that can be used in pixel art but, conversely, it's an art form of its own: "Sub-pixel animation", it's when you just change the palette instead of the sprite, with clever color choices, as long as there's little movement (1-2 pixels, like cloth/hair animation), bam you have fluid animation without actually animating it.
But again, the price for cheaping out on sprites is being a color wizard, so comics would require making up with story and clever pacing. Remember that Toriyama made SS Goku blonde, got convenient excuses to get rid of saiyan tails, and gave an arbitrary time limit to SS3 simply because these take too long to draw or, in the case of the tail, it would introduce problems later. Fashion problems. (Because in the setting a tailed humanoid isn't unusual so they would not bother concealing it)
