White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most pathogenic and devastating viral agent affecting the shrimp industry. Loosening and softening of the shrimp cuticle is a typical phenotypic syndrome after WSSV infection. Our study reveals that the cuticle damage is due to the enrichment of certain long-chain fatty acids, induction of chitinase, and ultimately decrease in cuticle chitin. The picture shows the damaged cuticle of kuruma shrimp after WSSV infection on the microscale with the scattered lamellar and peeling fragments of chitin-protein fibers. Wang et al 2024
