How to write division sign with iPhone and iPad

While texting on my iPad/iPhone sometimes I need to write out a division problem and there is not a key on the keyboard that has the division key symbol.

Example

500 divided by 40 = 12.5

The easiest way is to set up “Text Replacement”, on your keyboard settings.

Copy this symbol  ÷  first. (Tap long press to select and copy, same for paste)

Open the “Settings” on your iOS device, scroll down to “General”, scroll down to “Keyboard”, select “Text Replacement”.  Then select the + at top and on first text box paste the  ÷ symbol you copied, in second text box type the forward slash  /   and then select done.

So it will look like this:

and when typing forward slash / you select the ÷ symbol as shown:

that it.

This doesn’t work in the Notes app or this app either.

To insert the Unicode obelus ÷ (and if the text substitution mentioned above is not working), then you’ll need to use copy-and-paste as mentioned above, or install and use a third-party keyboard for iPhone or iPad.

Or a different app which does support text replacement.

Locally, I’ve used the Uni keyboard, though there are others available. (Uni lacks a search function, which can make finding some characters more effort. The obelus is in the Latin-1 supplemental block.)
