Spotlight Search is gone from IOS13 ?

After updating my iPad Pro to IOS13.1, I cannot get the SPotlight Search bar to appear. When I swipe down from the top of the screen, all I see are notifications. Swipe right from the home screen, I see the Today view, but no search bar at the top of the left panel. Any ideas on how I can get that back?

Ok, I finally found it. Middle to me means left / middle / right of the top of the screen. I finally found elsewhere that the center of the screen (not at the top or the bottom) works. Arrrgh. Why was this so hard to grasp?

Presumably it was this: Before iOS 7, Swipe Right for Spotlight could only be done from the initial Home Screen – if you were at your third Home Screen for example, you had to Swipe Right three times to use Spotlight.

...However, since iOS 7, you can "Pull down on any Home Screen to reveal Spotlight search" and use it immediately:

Can i get to spotlight search without closing the app? It works on iPhone but not on iPad as i see.

When i swipe down from the upper left corner and swipe right i get the widgets PLUS spotlight search on iPhone, do this on iPad and you only get the widgets and NO search bar. Anybody have a solution for this besides returning to the homescreen?

There have been many such problems, made worse by Apple not publicizing that many such swipes etc have changed their results in ios 13. I have three ipads and each now needs different gestures for many things. I do not think that these variations are documented anywhere, are they?

Also, some of the old results have ben “hidden behind” newer ones, so that you have to be very determined with a more emphatic gesture in order to get to the hidden one that you want. (One example is if you want to get the wobblies for editing the apps etc., a simple pres no longer does this, you have to be very determined to press through lots of pop-up stuff)

Again, I have not seen any documentation of these “multi effects”, or about these pop-ups, what are they?

Was there any warning that ios13 would make so many detailed changes affecting our everyday lives?

Did you actually start in the middle of the screen and drag down? I was totally confused by “drag down the middle of the screen” because I interpreted it as starting at the top middle and dragging down. When in reality what they meant was Do NOT start at any border of the screen. Start in the middle and drag down. Works for me every time, once I figured that out.

Reading the friendly manual reveals all the information you need 🙂

All iPadOS gestures are thoroughly documented within the iPad User Guide for iPadOS. This document is easy to find and download in the Apple Books App - and its free!

A mirror publication exists for the iPhone - similarly entitled iPhone User Guide for iOS13.1.

The Apple Book store has always been an invaluable resource in which to locate the official user manuals.

I take your point - but if you cannot find the on-device Search, there are some other search options should they be needed 🙂

The User Guide, for some unfathomable reason, is never installed by Apple on new devices. It’s an excellent (and regularly updated) publication that gives great insight. It’s a resource totally overlooked by the majority of end-users.

Whenever a major OS update appears, I always advocate finding the new User Guide in the Bookstore - and downloading it. Then if anything goes wrong, won’t connect to WiFi or the internet, or other help is needed - then it is close to hand. If nothing else, for many, reading through the early pages answers all those “how do I do this” type questions - of which our friendly forum fills whenever something new comes along. The contributors here are always willing (if not always able) to help where we can - but there are much faster (and sometimes more reliable) ways to get quick answers or resolution to a user issue.

there are many changes to both the UI and the gestures within iPadOS/iOS13 - and like all the controls, once introduced become second nature. We don’t always “like” some of them, but at least we can get to core functions (such as search) without too much hassle.

Anyway, genuinely and from the heart, I strongly recommend downloading the User Guide for reference. You’ll find them for every major version of iOS for both the iPad and iPhone. For the most part, they really are a lifesaver. There is also an online version - although, ironically, it’s not quite as friendly or searchable 🙂

You’re quite right - although I do recall needing some help with control gestures during my initial introduction to the ecosystem, but that was quite some ago 🙂

Major updates bring change - and new features - that are not always “obvious” in the sense of the original “it just works” concept. We all need a little help - sometimes 🙂

Sure it is a good idea to provide direct access from any home screen.

But since swipe right, as before, exposes many useful things, it could easily still provide Spotlight at the top, could it not?

Or is that too straightforward an idea?

And why wait until 13 to remove it? why is the old method now a problem but was not for 7 to 12?
