Vivek Murthy is the U.S. surgeon general in the Biden administration. The Senate confirmed Murthy on March 23, 2021, by a vote of 57-43.[1] He also served as U.S. surgeon general under the Obama administration from 2014 to 2017.[2]

Biography

Murthy earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1997 and M.D. and M.B.A. from Yale University in 2003. After graduating from medical school, he completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was an attending physician at the same hospital and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School from 2006 to 2014. He also founded Doctors for America in 2009.[2][3]

Murthy served as the U.S. surgeon general under the Obama administration from December 2014 to April 2017. Following his government service, he joined several boards at the RAND Corporation, NCAA, and the U.S. Olympics and Paralympic Committee.[3]

The Biden Transition announced on December 7, 2020, that Murthy would be nominated for U.S. surgeon general. Politico reported that Murthy was expected to cover a broader range of health issues than in his first term, including "both the immediate pandemic crisis and, once it ends, more systemic health care issues including substance abuse, mental health and racial disparities in health care."[4][5]
