State Board of Education
The State Board of Education is composed of seven voting members. Four are elected to four year terms in presidential election years by voters in each of the state's four congressional districts. The other three are appointed by the governor to two year terms - one is selected by the governor, one by the state Senate majority leader, and one by the speaker of the state assembly. These members are required to be from different areas of the state, and must consist of a teacher from a public school nominated from a list of three candidates provided by the Nevada State Education Association, one parent of a Nevada public school student, and one member affiliated with a state business.[3]
There are also four nonvoting members who are appointed by the governor to one-year terms - one nominated by the Nevada Association of School Boards, one nominated by the Nevada Association of School Superintendents, one nominated by the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada, and one student enrolled in a Nevada public school. Every four years, the board selects a president and vice president from among its members.[3]
The board's duties include the development of goals and benchmarks for the state's education system and annual reviews of the state's progress in meeting those goals. The board is also responsible for making recommendations to the Nevada Department of Education that help it better support teachers.[4]
