With Birda, anyone can get outside, identify and record the birds they see, and share them with a fun and inclusive community. Modern life pushes us away from nature. Start pushing back.

Birda is not your typical bird identifier app, it also connects the global community of birders irrespective of how they already record their sightings! Simply sync or import your records from eBird, Merlin Bird ID, iNaturalist, Birdtrack, Birdlasser, and more to get started.

Stay motivated by joining challenges and making new friends - it’s free! Don’t know a bird? Use the global field guide or tap into the community and use HI (Human Intelligence) to identify what you have seen - and grow your birdwatching & ID knowledge faster. Help protect nature by turning birding into a fun adventure. All with the help of a free bird app. Cool, right?

WHO IS BIRDA FOR?
Birda is a free bird app & community for anyone curious about nature and birds, no matter your level of knowledge or previous bird watching experience. We want to help you enjoy birds, so you are inspired to fight to protect them. If you like fun & nature, Birda is for you!

Have fun using your smartphone as a powerful tool to help conservationists protect a myriad of bird species. To get started:
1. Download Birda, it’s free!
2. Head out, head up.
3. Log your bird sightings - one at a time or multiple sightings as part of a birding session.

CITIZEN SCIENCE
Your bird sightings have a direct impact on helping conservation, so all that time in nature is good not only for you but also for the planet. Birda sends all of the sightings data it collects to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) so that scientists can use it to understand more about the world’s bird species and their habitats.

YOU CAN ALSO:
• Find birding locations & the bird species that occur there
• Use the field guide to identify what you have seen with reference images and bird calls
• Set birding goals
• Get bird identification suggestions from the community
• Help the community as a bird identifier
• Unlock achievement badges
• Take part in challenges
• Automatically create bird life lists
• See what birds other users have spotted
• Log sightings even when you’re offline
• Choose from multiple taxonomies (IOC, Clements & Birdlife HBW)

IMPORTS & EXPORTS
If you are coming from another platform, then there is no better way to get started than to import your records to Birda. We currently support imports from eBird, Merlin Bird ID, iNaturalist, Birdtrack and Birdlasser, with more coming soon. If you want to move your records to another platform, you are free to export all of your sightings from Birda.

LIFE LISTS
Birda automatically creates life lists of all the birds you've imported or recorded on Birda. Birda automatically generates sub-level lists based on time and geographic location. For example, you can see all your bird ticks for the last month or year and your home and patch lists (regions, countries, states/provinces & nature reserves coming soon!).

TAXONOMY
We understand that taxonomy can be complicated! This is especially true when people are trying to compare species across taxonomic authorities. For this reason, we built an industry-first solution to simplify taxonomy for our users. Our taxonomic engine makes taxonomy seamless, allowing users to view each other’s bird sightings in their taxonomy of choice, irrespective of what is being used by other users.

PRIVACY
You can choose to create a privacy zone around your address to hide the location of your garden sightings. Set up your home location, and Birda will also automatically create Home Lists and Patch lists for all the sightings you post within your Home and Patch boundaries. You have full control over what posts and GPS coordinates you share with others on Birda.

Amazing

I dont know what to say. The community is great, the features are great, no massive popup ads… I can’t get enough of it. It seems like even though there’s a diverse audience on Birda, everyone seems to get along great and have a lot of fun. You don’t have to tell everyone about who you are, or get into political matters or do anything stressful on Birda. It’s just an app where you can have fun outdoors and chat with a bunch of nice people that you don’t know but you sort of get to know in a way over time through the way they show themselves on the community. Overall, 10/10 app would recommend to birders of any skill level (being an extremely inexperienced birder myself 😅). Thanks for the great experience, Birda!

Great App

This app is wonderful for what it is! It's very quick and easy to log new sightings and upload pictures. The community is very nice and helpful, especially compared to other birding groups where arguments often break out. One of my favorite things is the feature where you can search through birds on the app and suggest one for an unknown bird species someone is wondering about. I think that if you could post videos and it was easier to log sighting in the "birding session" mode, I would give this app full stars. Videos would be incredibly helpful for identifying certain bird species. While that would be cool, I feel as if the efficiency of logging birding session sightings is a more important matter that needs attending to. Rather than being able to simply click on the bird I saw or press an increase button for the number of a certain species spotted, I had to click through multiple things just to log a sighting and manually type in the number every time. Despite this, I still think it's an interesting feature and definitely promising. Overall, I think this is a good app for the casual birder interested in finding a fun and helpful community to share with!

Thank you so much for your review and your wonderful feedback, we're really pleased to have you on Birda!

We do have some features which could help with logging birds. If you press the Settings button next to the species search bar when logging a session, you can change your session mode to Speedy and find a ticklist of birds. Let me know how you get on with this, we'd love to hear your thoughts.

We'd love to add videos, the team and I are looking into this for the future :)

Thank you so much again for your thoughtful review, if you have any more ideas for Birda, we'd love to hear from you at support@birda.org. Wishing you all the best and happy birding :)

Ok

I can see the potential for this app, especially for new birders. The ‘gamification’ and badges etc might make for fun challenges for new and old birders.
As someone who has been listing daily on eBird for years I am a lot more in tune with that app and record keeping style. Trying to use eBird with Merlin and then simultaneously keeping up with another similar app in the field is just too much and I personally find it too time consuming and distracting. I’ve given it a few weeks and realized it’s just one more thing I’m staring at on my phone when I should be concentrating on the birds and instead I’m staring at my phone trying to simultaneously keep two accurate lists with different types of data entry.
I may try adding eBird data manually at the end of the week for a bit but eBird has the top billing for accurately maintaining my personal records in an easy to digest format.
It’s a fun addition to the birding space and folks who aren’t big listers or eBird users will surely find it fun and valuable but it’s more of a novelty in my opinion. I do appreciate the effort to introduce another app to liven up birding.
