Kirklees joins scheme.
KIRKLEES Council has joined forces with four other local authorities to lay down the law.The council has teamed up with its counterparts in Calderdale, Wakefield and Bradford to appoint a joint legal panel of solicitors who may be called in as needed to cover specialist areas such as debt recovery, childcare, commercial contracts, licensing, planning and highways.
The panel will be called on when it is necessary for a council to employ the services of outside solicitors. Until now, councils have made their own arrangements. The new system aims to ensure a more efficient service.
Bernadette Livesey, chief law and administration officer for Calderdale Council, said: "With all the new functions and opportunities that are available as local authorities become more innovative and creative, we sometimes need support to deal with issues or to cover any backlog. This arrangement provides us with an effective way of doing just that."
Firms on the panel include Wilkinson Woodward with offices in Market Street, Huddersfield, and Fountain Street, Halifax.
