Tom's Guide was launched in 2007 by Bestofmedia, which was subsequently acquired by TechMediaNetwork in 2013; in 2014, TechMediaNetwork changed its name to Purch, which was acquired by Future in 2018.

Mark Spoonauer is responsible for the editorial direction, strategy and growth of Tom's Guide. He has covered technology for more than 20 years, focusing on reviews and product coverage. Mark specializes in covering all things mobile, having reviewed hundreds of smartphones and other gadgets. He speaks at key tech industry events and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, NBC, Fox News, Cheddar and more. Mark was previously editor in chief of Laptop Mag and served as reviews editor at Mobile Computing. His work has appeared in Wired, Popular Science and Inc.

Mike Prospero oversees all of Tom’s Guide’s evergreen content to ensure it’s up to date with the latest information. He is also in charge of the smart home devices, wearables, and drones categories for Tom's Guide. An avid runner, skier and foodie, he's always looking for the latest gadget that intersects with his hobbies. After receiving his Master of Science in journalism from Columbia University in 2003, Mike worked at Fast Company. Prior to that, he worked at The Times of Trenton and George magazine.

Jeff Parsons, U.K. Editor-in-Chief

Jeff is UK Editor-in-Chief for Tom’s Guide looking after the day-to-day output of the site’s British contingent. Rising early and heading straight for the coffee machine, Jeff loves nothing more than dialling into the zeitgeist of the day’s news and poring over the specs sheet of the newest products.

Ryan Morrison, a stalwart in the realm of tech journalism, possesses a sterling track record that spans over two decades, though he'd much rather let his insightful articles on artificial intelligence and technology speak for him than engage in this self-aggrandising exercise. 

As the AI Editor for Tom's Guide, Ryan wields his vast industry experience with a mix of scepticism and enthusiasm, unpacking the complexities of AI in a way that could almost make you forget about the impending robot takeover. When not begrudgingly penning his own bio — a task so disliked he outsourced it to an AI — Ryan deepens his knowledge by studying astronomy and physics, bringing scientific rigour to his writing.

Dave is a computing editor at Tom’s Guide and covers everything from cutting-edge laptops, the latest GPU tech, to ultrawide monitors. When he’s not worrying about dead pixels, Dave enjoys regularly rebuilding his PC for absolutely no reason at all. He built his first rig over 20 years ago, and he’s gone through more motherboards than he’s had hot dinners. Probably. 

In a previous life, he worked as a video game journalist during a career spanning the best part of two decades. Over that time he worked across both online and print, with bylines for GamesRadar+, PC Gamer, TechRadar, Edge and the Official UK PlayStation Magazine. He’s almost amassed an immeasurable amount of bad puns.

An avid PC and console gamer, Dave enjoys breaking out Fraps way too often as he obsesses over frame rates. Despite owning a graphics card that costs roughly the same as your average used car, he still enjoys gaming on the go and is regularly glued to his Switch. Away from tech, most of Dave’s time is taken up by walking his husky, obsessing about his various OLED displays and sweating over the fitness of half a dozen Arsenal players on any given week.

As a former editor of the UK's Hi-Fi Choice magazine, Lee is passionate about all kinds of audio tech and has been providing sound advice to enable consumers to make informed buying decisions since he joined Which? magazine as a product tester in the 1990s. Malcolm McMillan is a News Writer for Tom's Guide, focusing on all the latest tech news. Before writing for Tom's Guide, he worked many retail jobs and many Black Fridays, including a stint for Microsoft. In his spare time, Malcolm is also a fantasy football analyst on various podcasts and sites. Malcolm is passionate about video games and sports, though both cause him to yell at the TV frequently. If it’s in the theaters or available to stream somewhere, he’s probably watched it… especially if it has a dragon in it. Who we are: Fitness

James Frew, Fitness Editor

James is Tom’s Guide’s Fitness Editor, covering strength training workouts, cardio exercise, and accessible ways to improve your health and wellbeing. His interest in fitness started over 10 years ago after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. 

To help manage the symptoms, he began focusing on strengthening his core, taking regular walks around the city, and practicing meditation. He also invested in fitness trackers, home workout equipment, and yoga mats to find accessible ways to train without the gym. 

Before joining the team at Tom’s Guide, James was the Fitness Editor at Fit&Well, where he covered beginner-friendly exercise routines, affordable ways to boost your wellbeing, and reviewed weights, rowing machines, and workout headphones. 

He believes that exercise should be something you enjoy doing, so appreciates the challenge of finding ways to incorporate it into everyday life through short muscle-building sessions, regular meditation, and early morning walks. 

James’ work has appeared in Live Science, Happiness, and consumer technology sites like MakeUseOf, Lifewire, and Blocks Decoded.  He has reviewed headphones, fitness trackers, and smartwatches, covered events like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), IFA, and Black Hat Europe, and was named Muck Rack’s Featured Journalist in February 2021. 

He was a regular contributor to the Really Useful Podcast and a co-host for the Blocks Decoded podcast, and spent five years as a Listening Volunteer for the UK-based mental health charity Samaritans. Outside of work, you’ll find him out on long dog walks, listening to podcasts, and excitedly checking out each week's New Music Friday releases.

Jane McGuire, Senior Editor (Fitness)

Jane McGuire is Tom's Guide's Fitness editor, which means she looks after everything fitness related — from running gear to yoga mats. An avid runner, Jane has tested and reviewed fitness products for the past four years, so knows what to look for when finding a good running watch or a pair of shorts with pockets big enough for your smartphone. When she's not pounding the pavements, you'll find Jane striding round the Surrey Hills, taking far too many photos of her puppy.

Sam Hopes, Staff Writer (Fitness)

Sam Hopes is a level III fitness trainer, level II reiki practitioner, and resident fitness writer at Future PLC, the publisher of Tom's Guide. Having trained to work with mind and body, Sam is a big advocate of using mindfulness techniques in sport and fitness, and their impact on performance. She’s also passionate about the fundamentals of training and building sustainable training methods.  When she's writing up her experiences with the latest fitness tech, you’ll find her writing about nutrition, sleep, recovery, and workouts.

Jessica joined Tom’s Guide in October 2023 as a fitness writer. Running has been a constant in her life and she loves to write about the gear and training tips that get her over the finish line. She is a big advocate for balance when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle and likes experimenting in the kitchen with meals and snacks to aid her recovery before stretching out on her yoga mat before bed. 

Her love for exercise began while growing up in Scotland, where she spent her childhood swimming in the chilly North Sea and hiking up as many Munros as she can bag. Now based in London, she spends her free time pounding the city pavements or taking a dip in her local lido or the Hampstead ponds.

Dan Bracaglia, Senior Writer (Fitness)

Dan Bracaglia is a senior fitness writer at Tom’s Guide covering everything from Apple Watches to adjustable dumbbells, rain jackets to e-bikes. 

An avid outdoor enthusiast with 15+ years of experience in consumer technology reporting, Dan is well-versed in method-based gear assessment and deeply passionate about helping folks find the very best stuff for their budget. 

Prior to Tom’s Guide, Dan spearheaded the editorial relaunch of PopPhoto.com as news and features editor. He’s also served in full-time editorial roles at Popular Science, DPreview, Sound and Vision and American Photo. 

Dan’s gear recommendations have additionally appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Popular Mechanics and CNN Underscored. He’s an occasional guest on nerdy podcasts, like PhotoActive, The New Screen Savers and Slate’s Man Up, and has also self-published over 40 photography/music zines since 2003.

Nick Harris-Fry, Senior Writer

Nick has been a journalist since 2012 and has spent most of that time writing about health and fitness for a variety of publications. Nick spent nine years working on the Coach magazine and website before moving to the fitness team at Tom’s Guide in 2024. Nick is a keen runner and also the founder of YouTube channel The Run Testers, which specialises in reviewing running shoes, watches, headphones and other gear.

Nick has covered all aspects of health and fitness throughout his career, interviewing experts and celebrities, trying fitness classes and running marathons, all in the name of providing readers with the information they need to get the most out of an active lifestyle.

Nick ran his first marathon in 2016 after six weeks of training for a magazine feature and subsequently became obsessed with the sport. He now has PBs of 2hr 27min for the marathon and 15min 30sec for 5K, and has run 13 marathons in total, as well as a 50-mile ultramarathon.

Nick runs 50-80 miles a week and races regularly with his club, which gives him a lot of opportunity to test out running gear: he has tested and reviewed hundreds of pairs of running shoes, as well as fitness trackers, running watches, sports headphones, treadmills, and all manner of other kit. Nick is also a qualified Run Leader in the UK.

Nick is an established expert in running and fitness, especially with regards to testing kit and tech, and has written for many publications including Live Science, Expert Reviews, Wareable, Coach and Get Sweat Go, as well as being co-host on The Run Testers podcast.

Nick graduated from the University of York in 2010 with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and worked in the NHS for three years, during which time he completed his NCTJ Diploma in Journalism at News Associates in London. Before starting on Coach and moving into health and fitness, Nick worked as a football journalist and lived in Kathmandu, Nepal for two years.

Millie Fender, Senior Editor (Homes)

Millie is the Senior Editor for Homes at Tom's Guide. She's been reviewing home tech for over five years, testing everything from coffee makers to the latest vacuum cleaners. 

Starting out in 2019 as a Staff Writer at TopTenReviews, Millie then moved on to Future Publishing's Homes portfolio, where she eventually oversaw all product testing as Head of Reviews. 

With particular expertise in cookware and kitchen appliances, you'll struggle to find an air fryer Millie's not tested. She's traveled the world reporting on the latest home innovations and product launches, learning how to use pizza ovens from Pizzaiolos in Naples, and touring the De'Longhi factory in Venice.

When she's not reporting on home and appliance trends, Millie loves watching live music. She's currently learning the guitar — naturally, she plays a Fender.

Cynthia Lawrence specializes in Homes ecommerce, covering all things homes and garden-related. She has a wealth of editorial experience testing the latest, ‘must-have’ home appliances, writing buying guides and the handy how to features.

Her work has been published in various titles including, T3, Top Ten Reviews, Ideal Home, Real Homes, Livingetc. and House Beautiful, among others.

With a rather unhealthy obsession for all things homes and interiors, she also has an interior design blog for style inspiration and savvy storage solutions (get rid of that clutter!). Camilla Sharman has worked in publishing and marketing for over 30 years and has covered a wide range of sectors within the business and consumer industries both as a feature, content, and freelance writer.  

As a business journalist, Camilla has researched articles for many different sectors from the jewellery industry to finance and tech, charities, and the arts. Whatever she’s covered, she enjoys delving deep and learning the ins and out of different topics, then conveying her research within engaging content that informs the reader.

In her spare time, when she’s not in her kitchen experimenting with a new recipe, you’ll find her keeping fit at the gym. Hunter Fenollol, Smart Home Editor

Hunter Fenollol is a Senior Editor for Tom’s Guide. He specializes in smart home gadgets and appliances. Prior to joining the team, Hunter reviewed computers, wearables, and mixed reality gear for publications that include CNN Underscored, Popular Mechanics, and Laptop Magazine. When he’s not testing out the latest cooking gadgets, you can likely find him playing a round of golf or out with friends feeding his paycheck to a QuickHit slot machine. 

Hunter started his career as an intern at Tom’s Guide back in 2019 while in college. He graduated from Long Island University Post with a degree in Communications and minor in Advertising. He has been vlogging ever since the iPhone 4 took front-facing cameras mainstream.

Philip Michaels, Managing Editor

Philip Michaels oversees coverage of smartphones, apps, wireless carriers and all things mobile for Tom’s Guide. He’s been covering Apple since 1999, first at Macworld and now for Tom’s Guide. When not looking over the fine print in assorted cell phone plans, he’s likely ranting and raving about the Oakland Athletics or old movies.

John is a senior editor covering phones for Tom’s Guide. He’s no stranger in this area having covered mobile phones and gadgets since 2008 when he started his career. On top of his editor duties, he’s a seasoned videographer being in front and behind the camera producing YouTube videos. Previously, he held editor roles with PhoneArena, Android Authority, Digital Trends, and SPY. Outside of tech, he enjoys producing mini documentaries and fun social clips for small businesses, enjoying the beach life at the Jersey Shore, and recently becoming a first time homeowner.

Tom is the Tom's Guide's U.K. Phones Editor, which means he can usually be found knee-deep in news and articles about the latest phones, or checking out some sort of new gadget. It's long way from his days as editor of Gizmodo UK, when pretty much everything was on the table. He’s usually found trying to squeeze another giant Lego set onto the shelf, draining very large cups of coffee, or complaining that Ikea won’t let him buy the stuff he really needs online.

Richard Priday, Assistant Phones Editor

Richard is a London-based phones geek helping to cover news, how-tos and reviews for the latest smartphones. He has also written for WIRED U.K. and The Register since graduating with an MA in Journalism from the University of Sheffield, but before that he built custom gaming PCs and worked as a tour guide in a castle. These days, if he’s not at his desk, you’ll likely find him streaming movies, PC gaming, or learning how to be a specialty coffee snob.

Josh Render, Staff writer, Phones

Josh Render is a UK-based staff writer at Tom's Guides covering news and features focusing primarily on mobile phones and their workings. Josh has been around phones for many years, having worked in a few different second-hand retailers. He knows the ins and outs of most phones, including how to repair many of them. Meanwhile, he has worked as a freelance journalist for several publications which range over a bunch of different tech aspects. Josh is also a fan of pairing people with the right tech and helping people understand the more nuanced aspects of their latest purchases. Outside of phones Josh is a fan of video games, novels, and Warhammer and has worked around all three to some degree. 

Josh has a degree in Film Production from the University of Central Lancashire and has worked for publications such as GameGrin and CBR as well as a few smaller independent outfits. He is often found trying to pain models, completing levels, reading books, or figuring out the next best gaming app to invest his time in.

Peter is the Reviews Editor at Tom's Guide, based in the U.K. As a reviewer, writer and editor he covers topics including tech, photography, gaming, hardware, motoring and food & drink. Outside of work, he can usually be found telling everyone about his greyhound, obsessively detailing his car, squeezing as many FPS as possible out of PC games, and perfecting his espresso shots.

Nikita Achanta, Staff writer (Reviews)

Nikita is a Staff Writer on the Reviews team at Tom's Guide. She's a lifelong gaming and photography enthusiast, always on the lookout for the latest tech. 

Having worked as a Sub Editor and Writer for Canon EMEA, she has interviewed photographers from all over the world and working in different genres.

Claire Davis, Senior Sleep Editor and Certified Sleep Science Coach

Claire is the Senior Sleep Editor at Tom’s Guide, overseeing all mattress and sleep content for the site. As a Certified Sleep Science Coach, Claire is qualified to advise people on how to optimize their bedroom for better sleep, how to choose the best mattress for their body, and how to create a bedtime routine that helps them fall asleep faster – stay asleep for longer.

Claire has over 16 years’ consumer product testing experience too, and has reviewed a wide range of mattress types including hybrid, memory foam and cooling beds from the best brands in the industry. Claire regularly interviews certified sleep experts such as neuroscientists, doctors of sleep medicine and chartered psychologists to get their professional insight on a variety of sleep issues, tips and techniques, and has bylines published on leading websites including TechRadar and T3.

Nicola is a Sleep Editor at Tom’s Guide, specializing in quality news content surrounding sleep and wellbeing. Nicola cut her teeth as a journalist in a busy newsroom in Bristol, UK, 15 years ago as part of a team at Britain's largest independent press agency. 

Since then, her job as a journalist has taken her to the States, to Sydney, and then back to Blighty, where she has written and edited features for a whole host of prominent British and international brands, including  The Independent, The Sydney Morning Herald, HuffPost, Refinery29, Stylist and more.

Frances Daniels, Staff Writer (Sleep)

Frances joined the Tom's Guide team as Sleep Staff Writer, and her role includes covering all sleep and mattress news, in addition to mattress reviews and buyer's guides. 

Frances is a PPA-accredited journalist and is hugely interested in the relationship between good sleep and overall health. When not writing about sleep and mattresses for Tom's Guide, Frances enjoys writing about women's issues, health and wellbeing, and the environment.

Kate Kozuch, Managing Editor, Social and Video

Kate Kozuch is a managing editor at Tom’s Guide looking after social media and video content for the site. She also write about wearables, TVs and everything smart-home related. Kate also appears on Fox News to talk tech trends runs the Tom's Guide TikTok account, which you should be following (she'll find you if you don't.)

When she’s not filming tech videos, you can find her on an exercise bike, mastering the NYT Crossword or channeling her inner celebrity chef.

Who we are: Testing

Matthew Murray, Head of Testing

As head of testing for Tom’s Guide’s parent company, Future Media, Matthew helps coordinate and conduct product testing for all of the company's editorial brands, including Tom's Hardware, AnandTech, Laptop, TechRadar, PC Gamer, and, of course, Tom's Guide. Prior to his stint at Future, Matthew worked at publications as diverse as PCMag.com, ExtremeTech.com, Computer Shopper, Stage Directions magazine, and TheaterMania.com, and before that he worked in IT and helpdesk roles. He has also edited seven books, and for more than 16 years was the chief New York theater critic for TalkinBroadway.com.

Arif Bacchus, Lab Tester

Arif is the New York-based lab tester at Future Media, Tom's Guide's parent company. He works closely with the head of testing Matthew Murray. Everyday, Arif runs rounds of benchmarking tests on laptops, phones, tablets, and tech gadgets for Future's editorial brands, including Tom's Guide and sister websites like Laptop Magazine. Arif has over eight years of experience in the technology journalism field and is known to be a collector of Windows PCs and laptops.  As a writer before joining Future, he authored  hundreds of laptop reviews, op-eds, thousands of buying guides, and tons of news posts for publications like Digital Trends, XDA, OnMSFT, MSPoweuser, and Mac Observer.

Brian is a 40-year veteran of technology writing and reviewing, who has developed an emphasis on mobile, security and education. How We Test

Our editorial team rates products with two questions in mind: Is this a good choice for readers, and if so, who should buy it? We'll tell you whether an alternative is better or worse, and in what ways. We also find out what owners of these products are saying, such as by analyzing user reviews, to further inform your next purchase.

Our reviewers spend quality time using each product to determine how well it works for its target market. We'll go jogging with a fitness tracker, play the latest titles on a gaming keyboard or browse the web with several tabs open on a Chromebook.

We also run a bevy of benchmarks and real-world tests, many of which we've developed in-house. For instance, our smartphone, tablet and laptop battery test surfs the web over 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi, just as you would if you were using these devices at home.

What Our Ratings Mean

On Tom's Guide, all products are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, where higher is better. Products may also receive an Editors’ Choice award, which marks them as best-in-class. The ratings are as follows; anything rated 2 or below is not recommended:

5 stars = Practically perfect
4 stars = Totally worth it
3 stars = Worth considering
2.5 stars = Meh
