The use of solid fuels for cooking is a large-scale public health problem in the Americas and an environmental risk, affecting almost 90 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that in 2016 the burning of polluting fuels for cooking and heating in the Americas caused more than 82,000 premature deaths, and a loss of 2.3 million years of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).

In Honduras, 47% of the population (1,127,000 households) depend on firewood and other polluting fuels and technologies for cooking. According to the Multipurpose survey on households in 2019, 87% of the rural and 26% of the urban population used firewood for cooking (often in combination with electricity or LPG). In 2011, 66% of urban households bought firewood, compared to 49% in rural areas; This difference occurred since in rural areas, firwood is mostly collected. In 2013, only 39% of the total population had access to LPG, while in 2019, 80.82% of the population had access to electricity.
