WHO Guideline for non-surgical management of chronic primary low back pain in adults in primary and community care settings

7 December 2023 12:15 – 13:15 UTC Time

Launch of the WHO guideline for non-surgical management of chronic primary low back pain in adults in primary and community care settings

Purpose of the launch event

To publicly launch the WHO Guideline for non-surgical management of chronic primary low back pain in adults in primary and community care settings (the ‘Guideline’), to provide evidence based non-surgical care recommendations for chronic primary low back pain (CPLBP) to be implemented in countries. The event should mark the start of awareness-raising efforts for the Guideline among Member States, professional organizations, WHO collaborating centres and civil society organizations as an important tool to strengthen primary care health systems to address CPLBP. The launch event also serves as a forum to mark the commencement of further collective communications and implementation efforts, including integration of the Guideline with other WHO initiatives, such as Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE).

Objectives

The objectives of the public launch include:

  1. Outline the guiding principles of care for adults with CPLBP, the key messages for each stakeholder group [i) health workers; ii) policy makers/service managers; iii) community and public health], and the key recommendations from the Guideline, at a high level.
  2. Engage and empower a global network of stakeholders to support communication, dissemination, and implementation efforts for the Guideline, supported by a suite of available and planned communication and dissemination assets.
  3. Position the Guideline in the context of the Decade of Healthy Ageing and relevant WHO programmatic areas, including Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) and Rehabilitation 2030.
