You just have to be careful in there. Some of them get triggered if you talk about Corsair, Logitech, or Razer.

That sub views these 3 companies compared to the "higher-end" brands the same way that I view fast-food compared to expensive cuisine. It's understandable, and owning a Ducky Shine 5 I can somewhat relate, but some of them get hostile about it.

I think it boils down to how many of them invest a great deal of time, money, and creativity for the perfect mech, only to see cheaper plastic pre-made mass-produced boards. But hey, whatever floats their boat.

u/Vortax_Wyvern avatar

There? With all respect, the same applies to this sub. I was downvoted so fast that my head is still spinning just for saying that Corsair was a good choice for a GAMING keyboard

[deleted]
[deleted]

Yup, we have quite a bit of spill-over. You're absolutely correct.

But I think it's ironic, since Razer, Corsair, and Logitech are generally considered to be "gamer" keyboards. The elitists in these subs usually scoff at the "gamer" keyboards in favor of their preferred boutique brand(s).

The fact of the matter is that Corsair (and those other brands) are excellent mainstream gamer keyboards. They target the gamer crowd in terms of aesthetics and features, and they aren't entry level (like Cougar, Redragon, Azio, and others).

My thing is - quantify your statements (not YOU, but people in general). It's ok for someone to say that they don't think that Corsair is a good option, provided that they quantify it based on the requester's criteria.

For example, if a person is looking for a great all-around mechanical keyboard, with backlighting, and gamer-specific features, and doesn't want to customize too much, Corsair is an awesome recommendation. But if someone wants to customize the crap out of their mech, Corsair would be a bad recommendation due to their use of non-standard-sized keys. You'd want to go with something with a higher base build quality and standard sized keys, like a Ducky or a Code (among others).

Based on what you're telling me, I don't think that your comment was worth downvoting. But hey, I didn't see the context either.

I love my Pok3r but when it comes to gaming and wanting to change the audio volume the corsair has the sweetest option for that. I'd love a volume roller I could just have on my desk. Corsair has their own things that make them appealing to folks. I never liked typing on mine so I moved away from those keybs since I need an all rounder

Kudos to you. I would love a high quality tenkeyless or smaller mech with clean aesthetics, and switches I would actually really like, topped off with high quality. But shit's expensive.

I have that tenkeyless Logitech with RGB lighting. It looks pretty fucking cheesy and the switches are not very impressive, but it's tenkeyless, which is not easy to find for cheap, and the lights are pretty fun to play around with. Fits in with my G series Logitech mouse too, lights and all - and that too was pretty cheap for what it is. Sixty bucks for the keyboard, twenty-something for the mouse.

If I can get a better board for that money and similar features, I'm all in for it. Maybe a Lolita would fit the bill, but is it a decrease in quality over looks?

more replies More replies
u/fatboy93 avatar

True.

It's the same with food. One man's food might be another's poison. You gotta roll with what you got.

u/hrg_ avatar

My tenkeyless CODE is hands down my favourite keyboard, but I actually prefer my Corsair only while gaming. I'm a software engineer, so about 90% of my time is on the CODE, but for some reason I just prefer the Corsair while gaming.

I think it's all just a preference thing at the end of the day.

Bravo. Need to show this comment to my friends

I have to agree, I've got a Corsair K70 (MX browns) , a Rosewill with Alps blue clones, and access to an older board with a cherry clone (kinda feels like a slightly heavier blue, but not all the way to greens). I use The K70 as a daily driver because I can set up for profiles per game (and also visual studio) but I could never see writing a novel on it, and most DSA sets (my fave profile) won't work well with it.

As such I am designing my own board, and I can definitely see the appeal of getting it just right.

My biggest issue with any of the companies mentioned is their marketing. Razer and the "mecha membrane" as an example.

Isn't that the point of a "circle jerk" sub? To satirize prevelant opinions by holding absurdly strong versions of that opinion? It's a joke sub, it's not supposed to be taken seriously at all.

And that's 100% fine. The problem is when it bleeds over to the main sub as it often does here.

I have a WASD with a 200 dollar Star Trek Galaxy Set, my Razer Board is simply to eat and beat up on haha, though yeah. Thanks for the warning! some people can get a little nutty about their hobby, and defensive, I try to find a common balance. My next board is going to be a Real Force, now I'm just debating between the 87U 55g or the 104u Silent. While I love clicky, I need a silent option that's even less than my red WASD VP3...which has the Danger Zone set lol. lmao, again thanks haha. This will still be my main mech sub obviously.

u/topchuck avatar

Why corsair? I was under the impression they made pretty decent keyboards, and used Cherry.
Did something change?

[deleted]
[deleted]

I think "decent" is a matter of opinion. Corsair's offerings are considered inexpensive compared to what a lot of those guys recommend.

Anytime that you get involved in a niche hobby (Magic cards, mechanical keyboards, high-end audio, etc.) you're going to run into those who scoff at mainstream users, and those three brands that I mentioned are very much targeted at the mainstream. You won't see Ducky, Filco, Das Keyboard, and others in Best Buy :)

That said, I like Corsair and Logitech. Currently considering swapping my Shine 5 for a G810 (which would be considered sacrilege in that sub).

My local Microcenter carries Filco and Ducky - has for years.

I recommend skipping Logitech boards. The plastic they use in their keys is sub par. I had a G710+ a few years ago and the stems on the keys started breaking. I asked Logitech for replacements and they asked me to send the whole board in. (?!?!?!?)

Are there any better brands with a similar design? I really love the raised keys.

What you said is true, although corsair's current keyboard generation do support full 16.8M. Software (CUE) has improved over previous version (right now is CUE 2). It's also true that CUE is not intuitive, but it is powerful, and there is a LOT of downloadable profiles available in the net.

They lack some features like OSX software or dynamic lighting hardware import, but I'll personally take Corsair over Razer or cheap brands like Krom any day.

Im a little new to this. What exactly do topre switches bring to the table, say vs mx blues ?

u/seditiousseals avatar

Topre switches are very different from any pure mechanical switch. IMO, silenced Topre is pretty much the best switch there is. The THOCK sound combined with the crisp break as the dome collapses is just fantastic. Makes using my pure mechanical boards feel wobbly and clacky.

I feel the same way. It feels...too mechanical I guess haha. It's like, coarse? Unrefined? I don't know. I really enjoy my Topre boards. I sold off all my keyboards after getting one.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Am I too late for the Topre party?

After my Novatouch nothing else feels as plain old just right. They're like all the good parts of mechanical with some padding for the rough spots.

[deleted]

I got an HHKB and sold all my other keyboards and keycaps. Well, I kept the Pok3r because she was my first, but she lives in a drawer these days :/

They are not as clacky imo. They are a mix between mechanical switches and rubber dome switches. Sounds like a downgrade but they are super comfortable to me. I have mx blue and topre keyboards. I love my mx blues but honestly prefer the topre switches.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I just got one and it's kind people say, it's like a high quality rubber dome that's enjoyable to type on. In my opinion it makes mx feel artificial but not everyone will agree and it's something you have to try to find out if you like. For reference my second favorite switch is buckling springs next to it.

u/SpecCRA avatar

You really have to try it yourself. I personally think topre switches are meh and think my blues are fun. Topre are much smoother. That's not a contest.

There is something hugely satisfying with my HHKB Pro 2. I would like to see Topre's get a bigger market share. Everyone that has ever tried out one of my topre boards has been like "I have to get one now."

[deleted]
[deleted]

I put all my mx stuff on mechmarket an hour after buying my hhkb and I'm never going back. HHKB is endgame.

I think my biggest complaint specifically for my HHKB is the limited amount of things I can do with it in the long run. Frankly - I think it's a shame I will not be able to indulge in a lot of the really cool key caps or stuff like that on the customization end. Sure - it's fluff - but I like fluff. Fluff is the variety of life.

BUT ... I would never, ever consider getting rid of my topre boards in favor of something else. I own cherry boards, I enjoy them for what they are - but when I need to get serious typing done - it's Topre time.

However, if you know of a readily available avenue for customization of Topre switches that are not MX compatible - I would love to get my hands on a DSA PBT set.

[deleted]
[deleted]

You can novatouch it. Get some mx sliders from a novatouch, open up the board and swap the sliders out. I think maybe you can also just buy the sliders from somewhere. Anyway that would make it mx compatible.

I miss my gmk keysets as well but the stock caps on the hhkb are good and the hhkb overall is just unbeatable.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I'll sell you a novatouch for 120 bucks for the sliders xD

Upon doing some research, I had no idea how easy it was to change the sliders out. I am going to hunt down some sliders - might have to go through aliexpress, which I'm not thrilled about - but we'll see. :)

u/AllUpInYourGrill avatar

Just so you know, the Aliexpress ones are reported to be pretty low quality and feel scratchy.

Everyone that has ever tried out one of my topre boards has been like "I have to get one now."

Ah funny, I have the opposite experience : I use my HHKB at work and everyone who tries it is completely unfazed. I think Topre boards are really not that impressive for "regular" non mech keyboard users. And I know that in my case it was only after trying mx blues that I realised how I much I love Topre.

I think that's because the people I'm talking about are fellow enthusiasts. With people who are unfamiliar with the mechanical keyboard scene - they respond far more often to MX Blues or Browns over Topre. I still have a special place in my heart for MX switches, although my search kind of ended for the perfect switch when I got my hands on a topre board recently. That one topre board turned into three.

Funny how that works. I think since my ex-fiancee and I split, I've spent close to two grand between mice, keyboards, monitors, and other misc. things I never would of been able to get away with when we were together.

Upside of being cheated on? You get to buy a bunch of shit with the money you save.

Downside? You spend a lot of money on shit you really don't "need". :P

I have tried Topre once and I felt like typing on Rubber dome keyboard. I have looked at the price and thought it was ridiculuos. Vow to myself never gonna pay for it.

Today, I am using HHKB BT on daily basis..... Damn....

u/kemirea avatar

What made you change your mind about them? I have a Novatouch and used it for a day before noping the fuck out. It just felt so hollow and lifeless, like there was nothing there. I couldn't get over how light the switches felt either. Now it just sits there in the corner, as if mocking me for not "getting" it.

At first it would feel funny to type on compare to MX switch. But after keep using it for awhile and fingers get used to it, it will feel awesome to type to. Hard to explain, but the "Tock" feeling when buttom out is no one can beat.

Still using MX Brown and Clear, I think each switches give different feeling. We can enjoy all of them :)

How's your Hall effect? I've heard a lot of complaints

Definitely R1. Lots of room for improvement, mostly minor issues. They do send extra switches in case one doesn't work.

I got the bamboo 87, which doesn't have the paint issues that the acrylic did. It's fairly loud, they keys are pretty wobbly, and they're MUCH lighter than I expected (70g, don't want to think about what the 50g feel like). I added some o-rings and that helped a little.

The switches literally pop out of the pcb, so you can swap them out easily. A few of my switches weren't pushed in all the way when I received the board.

The bamboo apparently is easy to strip, so in the future they should use epoxy and brass threads. A few of the preset lighting settings on the tenkeyless are identical to the fullsize, which means that they aren't centered properly.

Because the switches aren't soldered, they a bit of wiggle room, which means that you can rotate them a few degrees, which obviously looks bad. The caps are definitely low quality, but work fine.

I'm pretty sure Kailh manufactures for Razer's own switches and Logitech also makes their own Romer G switches. Edit: wording

u/Vash_the_Stampede987 avatar

The point is the sentence is flawed. It should be Razer or Logitech keyboards, not switches. You could probably phrase it as Razer or Romer G switches but phrasing it as Logitech and Razer make it more appropriate to refer to the keyboards not switches.

And no, Razer has there own switches. Razer just used have licensing to use Kailh switches because Kailh sold to other vendors besides Razer.

Overrated in the sense that so many people here treat them as the be all and end all of switches. I'm sure they're great, but acting as if they are man's greatest achievement in the realm of mechanical switch design is just silly.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Switches are just that ,a switch, and everyone has different tastes but for a lot of people who actually work in an office, or live in a house who do a lot of typing consider Topre to be the best compromise you can possibly make between the softness of rubber domes(which, good rubber domes are honestly awesome, the new Microsoft board I'm forced to use at school is really nice) and a cherry switch. Also, if you do a lot of typing you have to take into account things like carpal tunnel and arthritis, and often times comfort and less noise way heavily on peoples minds.
