We've continued to work on our reading skills by learning different ways to write a reader response. Over the last few weeks I have been teaching my class how "good readers" are constantly interacting with the text. Whenever I read-aloud a story to the class, I display it on the SMART Board and have students sit on the floor with their writing notebook. Then they create a Double Entry Journal in which they record what they are thinking about while reading. Double Entry Journals
Double entry journals provide a great way for students in all content areas to engage in metacognition. If I were to assign a problem to a student that is intetionally difficult, then the student could use the double entry to solve the problem in different ways to build their prior knowledge. Then, the student, if they are unable to figure it out, can catalog their questions on the side for the next day in class.
