What data is available to query?

Spamhaus’ DNS blocklists are composed of continuously updated IP, Domain & Hash data which is made available using Spamhaus’ Data Query Service (DQS). This query-based offering protects against the vast bulk of spam and other email-borne threats at the SMTP gateway.

Spamhaus’ data complements other blocklists available via Halon to increase your catch rates and protection further.

You can also provide your SMTP data to Spamhaus, so any attackers specifically targeting your network will be automatically blocked within seconds. It’s simple to set up and you gain customized threat intelligence.

Who can use this solution?

Any Halon Protect customer can use this solution. Set up is extremely simple, and you can trial the data free for 30 days.

How is the solution configured?

The IP address of an inbound email is first assessed at SMTP connect, to get rid of most of the threats. When an email is blocked, the sender will immediately receive a notification, ensuring that emails do not lie unread in junk folders for weeks. Anything not blocked can then be filtered by content, which is checked against our domain and hash data. The hash data alone has caught >30% of spam messages for some customers.

This staged email filtering process is considered best practice:

Remove obvious spam sent from known botnets and spammers’ IP addresses.
Detailed analysis to identify emails containing malware or links to new websites that are controlled by spammers and cybercriminals.
