Ok output capacity, built in charger, cannot be USB charged while in use, no low voltage warning

Ok output capacity, built in charger, cannot be USB charged while in use, no low voltage warning
Warning: Those batteries output 1.5V as expected, but if they are low and you want to recharge them while powering the device that they are plugged in, it's not unreasonable to think you can plug them into a USB battery pack while they are being used in a device.I did that, and the batteries started outputting 5V which fried the GPS they were plugged into.I'm obviously not happy.I figured that out by using a volt meter after the fact and seeing the battery terminal voltage change from 1.5V to 5V after I plugged them into USBApart from this issue that will hopefully not be a problem for most:I tested 4 kinds of Lithium AA batteries, and I'm putting the test results below. There were the 2nd best (new Xtar are the best, EBL is 2nd best since it has the same capacity but without custom charger)New Xtar: Rating: 4.15Wh, Charge: 5.5Wh, 3.45Wh Usable discharge at 1Ahttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CF8ZNZ33/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1Summary:* This is the only lithium battery that drops its voltage to 1.1V to give you a low voltage warning. Other batteries I tested just die with no warning. That alone is a reason to select it. I tested it with my garmin GPS and it gave me 2H of low battery warning before finally dying. Very nice!* It is also the battery that gave me the most actual discharge capacity* Seller is not lying about cell capacity (thank you) which of course is higher than actual usable energy due to conversion losses* New charger is unfortunately bigger than the old one and drops the USB-A output feature to use your batteries as an emergency USB charger* Verdict: this is the best battery I tested and what you should buy as long as you don't need a built in charger like EBLOld Xtar: Rating: 3.3Wh, Charge: 5.3Wh, 2.7Wh Usable discharge at 1Ahttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NLVJDY6Summary:* This is the older Xtar battery. It had best in class capacity until the newer one that came out with added low voltage warning. There is no good reason to buy this battery anymore, get the new one.* Its capacity is equivalent ot the EBL battery with built in USB charging, so the EBL is more versatile* The charger is very compact and can act as a USB power source, that's a nice feature.* 10.6Wh to charge 2 batteries, or 5.3Wh charge per batteryEBL 3.3Wh rating, Charge: 4.3Wh, 2.7Wh usable discharge at 1Ahttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08RZ5NDMMSummary:* There is no low voltage warning, but the battery capacity is actually equivalent to the old Xtar despite the space lost to the built in charger. The new Xtars last longer than the EBL though.* Interestingly EBLs need less energy to charge than Xtar for the same output capacity, they are more efficient* Big warning: if you try to charge the batteries via USB while they are in use, they are going to output 5V instead of 1.5V. This is unexpected and fried one of my GPSes. You cannot charge them while they are being used.Deleepow 3.4Wh rating, 3.8Wh charge, 2.4Wh usable discharge at 1Ahttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NLXQRP3Summary:* These battery are not for sale anymore, and they were the least performing amongst the ones I tested.* The 3.4Wh cell capacity is probably untrue with the charge and discharge numbers I got

First off, power and current are two different things. The electric companies charge you for the power, not the amperage. These will provide a relatively stable voltage throughout their discharge cycle. Some batteries are rated in mAh, some are rated in mWh (milli Watt hour). My favorite eneloop pro batteries are rated at 2500 mAh but only provide 3000 mWh of energy, enough of that.
If your device does not mind the supply voltage dropping over time (like a flashlight beam getting weaker), then you do not need these. If you want a stable voltage, then these are good. I have read reviews where people say these do not last as long as NiMh. Guess what? The NiMh have equal or less power. The NiMh just lower the voltage as they discharge, and seem to last longer, at greatly reduced output.
It is confusing, but for things like lights and radios that work better with a steady voltage, these are good.
The downside is that when these are done, they just quit. 1.5V until the end, so keep some handy.

Great battery duration and fast charge

Bought a set of these EBL AA batteries and did a head-to-head comparison against Energ*zer AA alkalines. I used 3 batteries to power a string of LED fairy lights and let them run until the lights went out. Here are how the results (time until lights out):

EBL 3300 mWh AA: 25 hours
AA Alkalines: 145 hours

That's not a misprint! The alkalines powered that string of lights for over 6 days! One interesting factoid was the end game for the EBL's was a quick death. The LEDs stayed bright, then suddenly went out. The LEDs powered by the alkalines gradually faded over the last two days.

I gave the EBLs 4 stars because they work fine in my Apple Magic Mouse. Even though they don't last as long as the alkalines, they last long enough that it's not a hassle to take them out and recharge them when they die. I'd hesitate to use them for anything with a large power draw since they simply don't pack a lot of juice.

I have several sizes and multiple sets of these rechargeable batteries. I like them a lot. They work well and have decent life. I have not tried for any outdoor applications except for items I use outside in good weather. I could see where USB port plugs would be a good idea for long-term outdoor use. Overall, very happy.

User manual seems to contradict potential charging source claims on product page!

The manual that comes with the batteries states “Use Li-ion compatible battery charger.” This contradicts claims on the product page that any USB power supply can be used. The manual implies that the safety protocols provided by such a charger are not present otherwise.

Since many negative reviews contain incidents regarding batteries overheating during charging, it appears that these occurances are likely caused by the use of a simple USB power supply and not a suitable Li-ion capable one as recommended. In the event of problems with the batteries, a simple USB power supply will not limit the power supplied during a malfunction and could result in a bad, if not disastrous, outcome.

This is not necessarily the fault of the consumer, as everyone knows that most people never read the instructions!

I wanted to post this right away due to public safety concerns. I may update this review with more information regarding “the normal stuff” once I’ve had some experience using these batteries.

I’ve only given them 3 stars (average) for now, since I don’t know anything as yet.

I have installed them in a radio controlled (atomic) clock and basic thermometer/barometer station with wireless remote temperature sensors. I installed them without topping them off as they are pre charged. So far, they are functioning as expected, but it’s only been about 9 hours since they were installed.

I like that these recharge over about six hours. I like that they fail clean. With alkaline batteries my electronics fade and flicker as the batteries approach replacement. With these rechargeables, one minute it's working and the next minute it's not. Nice.

I use them to power a steampunk life counter for Magic:The Gathering. My electronics take 6v and turn it up to 180v to power three nixie display tubes. I get about 10-12 hours use out of a set of four before they need replacing. One more reason I like them, is that if I choose not to use the life counter, I don't have to worry about the batteries leaking and corroding my pack.

Purchased in July 2023, while it seems that there is a slight price increase by now… The voltage stables at exactly 1.5V, which is far more useful than the traditional 1.2V NiMh rechargeable AA batteries. I didn’t see the performance drop after 10+ charges. I am hoping the safety issue would not be a concern (which was indicated by several reviews with pictures though)…
