Understand power dynamics in interviews

- Employers want you to succeed. Hiring is a lengthy and expensive process for employers, and, realistically, they don't like it, and they would prefer to never have to do it. So when employers invite you to interview, they hope that they're going to hire you and finish the recruitment process. You are never just another candidate to them. They genuinely want you to be the one. This means that, when you step into the interview room, you have as much power as the employer. They want you, and they need you. Stop thinking of the interview as a place where you have to convince the employer to hire you. Think about it as an opportunity to learn about the role and decide if it aligns with your aspirations. Every time you have an interview, I want you to ask yourself, "Do I truly want this job? "Is it the right fit for my career goals, "values, and work-life balance?" Yes, employers are evaluating you, and you do need to market yourself, but you are also there to evaluate them and the job opportunity they are offering. So I want you to pause this video and write down what you are looking for from your next job opportunity, everything from what you want to be working on to the kind of manager and team you want, to your compensation. This will be the foundation of what you'll need to find out about the role in your next interview. And as you're working on this first step, go ahead and download the Step-by-Step Interview Guide in the exercise files. It will help you work through this course and ensure that you don't miss a single step.
