Why do you have a hard time listening?
- The first part of becoming a better listener is understanding why it's so hard. Here are some things to keep in mind. A common culprit is simply that we're distracted. Studies have shown that there's only so much the human brain can focus on at once. If you're trying to do 10 things at once, something is going to slip. Unfortunately, if you're talking with someone, oftentimes that thing you lose is what they just said. Another reason why people fail to listen is that they're too busy interrupting. Now, why might you do this? Sometimes it comes from a good place. Someone says something that gets you excited and so you want to jump in and contribute. "You're from Paris? I love Paris. I went to Paris on my honeymoon. There's the cutest little cheese shop." But that excitement usually gets misread as, I'm not listening to what you're saying at all and I only want to hear myself talk. A third reason people don't fully…
