Guidelines for choosing and combining typefaces

- The most common question I'm asked is, "How do I know what typefaces go together?" Let's take some of the mystery out of combining typefaces. Our goal is to identify type combinations, which will live harmoniously with one another. Think of a happy marriage. Do you really need more than one typeface? It depends on your project. You might be better off selecting just one typeface with a large family of variations. For example, Helvetica Neue, which has many weights and widths. And because the fonts all originate from one family member, you can be sure all the other family members will play well together. In other words, visual compatibility, or visual harmony is built in. Here are some perfectly handsome projects, which use only one type family. This beautifully calibrated business card uses the typeface Kingfisher.
