Build team trust by extending trust
- My former boss, Sue, asked our team to create a three-day course for the vice president and his team. Sue was responsible for this event. Her credibility was on the line and yet she let our team take a crack at it. Knowing that she trusted us made us trust her and it spurred our performance. I mean, we dared not let her down, and to this day I do anything for Sue. But I've also coached a leader, we're going to call him George. George wanted to make some major changes in his department but he did not trust that the team would be supportive. So he introduced bits and pieces of the change without ever sharing his overall vision. His team then opposed all of his ideas. because they didn't understand them, and their opposition created a self-fulfilling prophecy.
