From the course: Build Your Logical Thinking Skills

What is a claim?

- What is a claim? In the legal world, a claim is a piece of paper, filed in court against someone else, alleging that that person violated a law. In our everyday lives, a claim can be a conclusion. It can be a premise, it can be a belief, and it can feel like someone who's making the claim has drawn a pretty clear line in the sand. And when that happens, our instinct is to stick by that claim is to defend that claim. So in this course, we're going to break down the elements bearing on the claim, and circle back to the premise. Maybe you stick with it, but maybe you realize that with a little more thought a better outcome is best for you and your company. There's a fair amount of brain research around reactive decision making. When we are faced with something that feels a little uncomfortable, or maybe even causes us some fear or anxiety, or on the flip side, we can be faced with an exciting prospect take this new job, by this shiny object. The hormones that flood our bodies in a moment when we have to make a difficult decision. Take about 20 to 30 minutes to leave our systems. And those hormones are really important in a fight or flight situation. It's the kind of thing that has kept the human species going for thousands of years. It helps us make great decisions in the moment to protect ourselves or to move towards something that's really beneficial. But these days, that same fight or flight reactive response can get us in trouble, when it comes to complex decisions in the workplace or at home. A logical approach to decision-making can separate that reactive part of our brains that can become emotional from the more thoughtful, methodical, careful part of our brains. And it's that second set of skills that are really important when it comes to making decisions that have implications both in the moment and in the long term. And we're going to talk about those throughout this course.
