- In the previous video, we talked about a few common autistic traits. Let's talk about some more, starting with stimming. Stimming is short for self-stimulatory behavior and refers to repetitive body movements, vocal tones, or the use of a sensory fidget toy. Stimming is generally an unconscious action done solely to stimulate one senses, or as an outcome of being under or overstimulated. When I'm happy, I get very excited, my voice changes and I may bounce or flap my hands. When I'm in the lovely flow of hyperfocus, I may rock or sway as I work like this. When in the zone, I often experience pleasure, and a stim can be the outward manifestation of my joy in concentration. As a late diagnosed autistic woman, I learned to hide many of my stims in public, especially vocal ones as a way to fit in.
