What do you do if your remote team lacks trust and rapport?

Si no hay confianza, no hay equipo! Además de la simpatía, la confianza es el pilar de todo equipo. Entender la casuística de la desconfianza es vital para poder aplicar una estrategia efectiva de liderazgo que revierta la situación. La falta de comunicación juega parte importante en estos problemas, debemos comunicar con calidad y empoderar a nuestro equipo. Hacerlos participes de las decisiones que se toman referentes. Realizar reuniones en equipo es individualmente a todos los involucrados nos va a brindar la información necesaria para reafirmar las modificaciones necesarias en la estrategia de mejora. La confianza no es algo que se pide o da, la confianza debemos ganarla!

The first step in resolving the issue of trust within our team is to find out about their perceptions of trust and rapport. In order to do so, we can conduct anonymous surveys, one-on-one meetings and feedback sessions with our remote team members in order to gain insight into main reasons behind the issue of lack of trust and rapport. Based on my experience, poor or ineffective communication among team members will primarily lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations and over time will eventually result in the lack of trust.

One effective strategy employed was establishing clear and transparent communication channels to outline roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for each team member. Utilizing project management tools like Asana or Trello, I created shared dashboards where team members could track progress, deadlines, and task assignments in real-time. Moreover, regular virtual meetings were scheduled to discuss project updates, address concerns, and solicit feedback from team members. By setting clear expectations and fostering open communication, team members were empowered to collaborate effectively, build trust, and cultivate strong rapport despite geographical barriers.

We need to use technology to facilitate communication among team members. Investing in communication tools can help our organization increase real-time interactions. Video, audio-conferencing tools will allow our team to collaborate oN their tasks when working remotely. These platforms have been enhancing communication, collaboration, and engagement in virtual environments where employees are working from different cities, regions, or countries. What complements technological solutions for interactions among team members is adopting a human-centric approach. Mangers need to remind team members on the importance of open communication. They need to promote a positive team culture and help their staff build quality relationships.

Encouraging collaboration creates opportunities for better communication, and cooperation among our team members who are working remotely, Effective communication and cooperation can help build trust and rapport. Companies can encourage stronger relationships and enhance cohesion among their team members by creating a collaborative culture and providing the necessary support and resources.

To overcome lack of trust and rapport, we need to encourage and recognize contribution. Recognizing contribution will create and improve a culture of collaboration and appreciation among the team members. This culture will also result in better engagement, productivity, satisfaction and a positive team dynamic. Here are a few strategies for recognition of our team members' contributions: Public acknowledgment, Personalized recognition, Performance reviews, Peer recognition programs

Remember to praise or compliment others honestly for the work that they have done and not criticize them. Few good words from time to time goes a long way. Bonus: Appreciating their efforts in front of the team holds more value.

Additionally, I encouraged informal communication channels like dedicated Slack channels for non-work-related discussions, allowing team members to bond over shared interests and experiences. By prioritizing relationship-building efforts, we cultivated a more cohesive and collaborative remote team environment, leading to improved morale, productivity, and ultimately, project success.
