I have been working with dispersed global teams my entire career. 3 ways to build a culture that fosters productivity and collaboration include the following: 1. Establish 1 definition of winning. Answer these questions: What are we here to do? Who does what? How much time do we have for each task? Once you answer these questions, document the answers, create a step by step plan to reaches the goal, and Go! 2. Set and embrace communication norms. Establish communication patterns like daily or weekly calls. Establish the chain of command to break gridlock. Mandate note taking. Bravo! 3. Celebrate together. Try to get budget, assemble in the best locale possible, and raise a glass when you win, at least once a year. Chapeau!

This topic has been on my mind for the last 10 days and I asked a few senior leaders their views on it. I went into these conversations with an open mind, and listened. Guess what, my hypothesis was confirmed - remote collaboration is built on the same principles as face to face work in teams - clear and shared objectives, feedback, rewards, bonding, etc. Perhaps for remote teams more focus is needed on clear team rhythm (e.g. annual meetings etc), on the value of building trust via open conversations with each other and team activities, leveraging modern technology in a smart way etc. And one more thing is learning from existing experience - e.g. sales reps, they have always been “remote” - so what can we learn from them ? …

In my experience running a remote team for the last few years. To make remote work successful overall, one of the most important aspects is to hire right. You need to hire candidates who are driven and motivated intrinsically and are outcome-oriented. At the same time, these are open communicators who'd not shy away from "over-communicating".
