Reflect on whether you possess the necessary knowledge and expertise to effectively guide others through their career journeys. Ensure proficiency in career development theories, action plan creation, and communication skills. Based on my experience in training and mentor coaching prospective life, career and business coaches, adopt the mindset of a business owner versus a hobbiest from day one. Immediately formalize your business and start setting up your infrastructure. It will take time for the Legal Setup and will take even more time to determine and implement your infracture (client agreements, welcome documents, filing/organization systems, communication platforms, social media marketing, website, brand, etc.). If your practice takes off quickly, you’ll be ready. And, when you have business expenses to cover each month, you’ll be more likely to focus on achieving business results for yourself. Remember: It’s a business, not a hobby!

Continuous learning is vital for all coaches but it becomes even more crucial for self-employed coaches. We need to stay ahead of industry trends, maintain and expand our networks – tasks that can feel more natural in a collaborative environment. As a self-employed coach, accountability and self-discipline become essential to drive continuous learning. One strategy I've found effective is setting monthly learning goals, that could include networking, building on foundational coaching knowledge or something completely new.

Make sure that you have the confidence to undertake such an endeavor as starting your own business, which is what we are ultimately talking about. You will go through some hardship and some questioning of yourself, maybe some imposter syndrome, some ego bruising as you get yourself and your business up to the point where you it can sustain itself as a financially viable business.

It is true that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to decide on your niche as soon as possible: which problem you're solving and for whom. But if you don't have that clarity yet, you won't find it by endlessly thinking about it. You need to start moving in some direction even if you're not sure if it's the right one. And then take a step back to evaluate it. Then repeat. It's like waltz dancing. If you just sit and think, you won't have enough material to work with and you'll likely be stuck in a perpetual loop of your thoughts. And if you constantly move in random directions without reflection, you won't have a clear focus and after a while, you'll find yourself in chaos.

First coach for hours and hours! Coaching once or twice may give you the hype but doing it as a job is a whole different story.
