Take advantage of FAM (familiarization) trips when you can. That gives you an idea and builds relationships with what you want to promote. I do site visits at hotels that are nearby and in our consortium and preferred hotel. This is also a way to gain insight and experience. Though if you can spend a night, that would help too.
