The journey to sustainable and attractive packaging begins with material selection. Opt for renewable resources like bamboo, recycled paper, or bioplastics that can be replenished or decomposed easily. These materials not only reduce waste but can also be crafted into visually appealing designs. Remember, the tactile experience of packaging can be just as important as the visual one, so choose materials that feel good to the touch and convey quality.

If you are packaging food and beverages, glass is an obvious first choice for unique and premium products. It is inert and doesn't have food/beverage contact problems. It is 100% infinitely recyclable and doesn't degrade in quality or material when recycled. If people don't recycle it for whatever reason, Mother Nature will. And, WOW, can it create branding. Do you need to see the label on a Coca-Cola or Jack Daniels bottle to know the brand? Sometimes we look beyond the obvious for material choices -- and there's a place for other materials. But glass has been used to store things for 1000s of years for a reason and consumers generally prefer it to lots of other alternatives.

Incorporate interactive or engaging elements into sustainable packaging, such as QR codes linking to educational materials on sustainability or augmented reality experiences, adds significant value by enhancing consumer interaction and awareness. These interactive features provide an opportunity to educate consumers about your brand's sustainability efforts, inspire behavior change, and foster a deeper connection with your products, ultimately reinforcing your brand's commitment to sustainability in a memorable and engaging way.

To find sustainable and non-toxic packaging products for your office, one can adopt the following techniques: 1. Always read the labels and see if the products are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and fair-priced. 2. Check if the product and the company have sustainability certifications like Green Seal, EcoLogo, and USDA Organic. 3. Always opt for products that have minimal packing and even that packaging is either reusable or biodegradable. 4. Buy in bulk to reduce the price of transport and hence carbon footprint. 5. Always educate the people in your environment and circle about eco-friendly products and encourage them to use them.

Having attended some trash clean-ups in honor of Earth Month recently, I can attest that materials really matter. Between a plastic bottle and a glass bottle, I focused on picking up plastic bottles, because the glass one would eventually grind down into sand and soil amendment. The plastic bottle will degrade into microplastics that harm land and ocean creatures, eventually bioaccumulating up the food chain onto our plates.

Packaging is a part of branding, and therefore, to create sustainable packaging, a brand would need to establish itself as adopting sustainable practices. Once that is being practised both internally and externally by the brands, the job is to create an aesthetically appealing package. However, with constant innovation, the use of sustainable materials and creative textures will add to the aesthetic appeal of the brand, thus making it both sustainably and aesthetically appealing.

To ensure your brand identity is reflected in your packaging without compromising on sustainability, opt for eco-friendly solutions. Use soy or vegetable-based inks for printing, which are less harmful to the environment compared to petroleum-based alternatives. Consider incorporating unique physical features such as embossing or stamping, which add tactile elements to the design without the need for chemical-heavy processes. This approach not only reinforces your brand’s aesthetic and story but also showcases your commitment to environmental responsibility. By choosing sustainable materials and innovative techniques, you can create packaging that impresses customers and aligns with your brand's values.♻️♻️♻️

The way that packaging is currently sourced often the company using the packaging doesn't have a process in place to retain all of the specs in a central database. Without this you are unable to: 1) provide the data needed for greenhouse gas calculations 2) provide data for lifecycle analysis 3) have your team analyze different packaging configurations and materials to deliver ongoing improvement. I've seen very large brands struggling with this situation. If you begin changing your systems and centralizing this information now and continue with all future packaging projects, you'll be able to deliver on many corporate sustainability and cost saving efforts.

From my experience in #sustainablemarketing, here are my top tips: • Chose minimalism: it creates a sophisticated look, with a limited impact on the environment. The brand I have in mind is Patagonia and its minimalist garment bag made from recycled materials. • Use materials from nature: bamboo, cork, recycled wood pulp... There are many aesthetic options that have the benefit of being biodegradable. • Use color: sustainable doesn't mean bland. Todays, you can find soy-based inks and natural pigments that offer a real alternative to harmful inks. • Finally, think about reusing and recycling the packaging: create refillable containers, or containers that can be repurposed for storage. #Sustainablepackaging can be creative too!
