How do you cope with the trade-offs and constraints of sustainable packaging design?

It's important to prioritize your sustainability objectives clearly. The temptation to address every aspect is understandable. However, trying to solve everything may dilute the impact of your initiatives. A focused approach, such as prioritizing carbon footprint reduction, can often yield more significant, measurable outcomes to deliver innovative solutions that can dramatically reduce environmental impact. Engaging with consumer feedback on sustainable packaging presents both opportunities and challenges. The growing consumer demand for plastic reduction, for example, is a testament to the heightened awareness and concern for our environment. But consumers' perceptions may not align with the best way forward.

Change is always scary, but being open to the challenges and embracing the final objective of sustainability is the only way forward to finding the best solution and continuously improve on it.

It is important to have a clear perspective on the goals of the project. Is it need SFI, FSC, PEFC, and other certs. Does close proximity to production location matter? What is the budget? Qtys? Timeframe? Preferred print method? What types of inks?

It is interesting that there is a lack of functionality being considered with the criteria. There must always be a design that is convenient for the consumer, protects and preserves the product that is packaged. In addition to this, a budget should be set as well as other areas that @joshua linden has outlined. Also, what market is the product for?

It's hugely important not to mislead consumers. There are plenty of instances now of "cardboard bottles" that actually have a plastic inner liner and there is much debate in the industry, whether this is a sustainable choice or if it is causing issues with recyclability when it comes to separating the outer card and inner plastic components.

When designing packaging, essential criteria include product protection, functionality, convenience, sustainability, machinability, cost efficiency, compliance, and consumer delight and it is a balancing act to meet them all. It's crucial to prioritize "must-haves" to frame your design options and material choices. Never compromise on protection of perishable food, that may result in food spoilage and waste. Focus on environmental (resource use, emissions, biodiversity), social (community impact, labor practices) and economic aspects. List key certification requirements such as recyclability, biodegradability, and carbon footprint, ensuring your design meets these critical standards. Remember basic consumer needs, but do not overindulge.

This is a far more complex issue than just researching materials. There is a lot of nuance to materials, LCA and application. Not all materials will be suitable for the product (undesired reactions, leaching etc). Perhaps mention of the 4R process? Remove, reduce, reuse, recycle? A bio-degradable material is, by definition, single use. However, in some markets, this could be seen as a solution to litter - but, it must be home compostable, rather than industrially so - Bio-degradability is too vague and poorly defined word.

Packaging design has three core functions: it needs to protect the product during transportation all the way through to it being merchandised in store, it needs to communicate why it best meets the consumers needs, and it needs to be easy to interact with and use, from a functional point of view.

A collaborative approach also fosters knowledge sharing and idea exchange among stakeholders—by leveraging collective expertise, creativity, and insights, new possibilities emerge that might not have been envisioned independently. Collectively, stakeholders can co-create solutions that are not only environmentally friendly but also commercially viable and technically feasible. Manufacturers have a huge responsibility on their shoulders to inform consumers in a transparent and honest way.
