Dengue and Chikungunya: measures relating to the safety of blood transfusions and transplants

The French High Council for Public Health (Haut Conseil de la santé publique) issued recommendations for adoption in 2019, aimed at preventing the transmission of the dengue and Chikungunya viruses via blood transfusions and transplants. In view of the rapid evolution of the international epidemiological situation regarding these two arboviruses, the purpose of this Statement is to propose an operational strategy concerning the measures to be implemented vis-à-vis donors of human body parts and products. These recommendations, which are identical for labile blood components, organs, tissues and cells, concern the updating of the lists of countries for which measures involving delays or exclusions for donors are implemented, previously used both by the French Blood Donor Service (Établissement français du sang) and the French Biomedicine Agency. This update concerns the addition of 14 countries for dengue, and 9 countries for Chikungunya.
