Preventive measures against Monkeypox virus infection

On 8 July 2022, the French High Council for Public Health (HCSP) updated its previous advice on prevention measures against the transmission of Monkeypox virus (MPXV).

  • The prevention measures to be implemented in the surroundings of a case include the need for people with a confirmed symptomatic MPXV infection to self-isolate and refrain from sexual intercourse until skin lesions are healed; behaviour at home and the recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting the environment around the case are detailed in the statement.
  • Preventive measures in the health care setting concern health care workers, patients, and visitors, as well as measures for cleaning and disinfecting the patient’s environment.
  • Prevention measures for the general public and specific populations, notably in festive gatherings and events, are also specified; the HCSP recalls that only people who have a physical contact with a person presenting with a symptomatic MPXV infection are exposed to the risk of being contaminated by this virus, and that people with confirmed or suspected MPXV infection should not participate in gatherings and festive events where intimate physical or sexual contacts would take place among participants.
