What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
I had a lot of fun in the everyone can code program and it further solidified my passion for coding and app development. Currently, my knowledge of Swift is only at the surface and I would love to gather the experience to create a working app with the App Accelerator program. During high school, someone at Jones created an app to view our grades on our phone and it made all of our lives much easier. I thought that was really cool and I wish I knew how to do the same. With app accelerator, I can build an app that's even cooler than just a grade viewer and improve the lives of those around me. I am also very excited to meet new people who are also passionate about app development. Meeting my teammate in Everyone Can Code helped me in college because she's an upperclassman at where we both attend.

I am currently an undergraduate student (freshman) studying computer science. I am completely certain that I will go through with computer science because I cannot imagine myself working at a job that doesn't involve computers and coding. My overall career goal so far is to get into either the app development or the game development industries because I really enjoy designing things and seeing them being put together into something tangible and fun. Eventually I hope to score a job as a product manager in a video game company and enjoy having my passion as a job. If I end up with a great idea and enough resources, I would really want to start my own video game company and create the next worldwide market-breaking game like Genshin Impact.

What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
I want to be a part of the App Acceleration program because I can positively contribute to whatever project or team I am assigned. I will bring creativity, organizational, communication, public speaking, leadership, and past coding experience skills, but I am also eager to learn new applications and techniques. I take pride in always being prepared as I start my day for school, and I enjoy new challenges that might come my way. Being in the Mobile App Design and Development course at DPI and learning Swift’s Xcode, I could take on a new programing language because it was different than python, but I was eager to learn. I am always ready and prepared when the worst occurs, so when doing daily activities, whether in class, playing sports, or managing my volleyball team, I can take control of the situation. I like complex challenges; I believe that it helps me stay focused and it helps expand my knowledge by making me do more research, and sometimes they can take me outside my comfort zone to help me grow.

My passion has been Computer Science ever since I could remember. I recall, in sixth grade, asking my dad if I could sell my PlayStation to buy parts to build my computer. My original goal was to have a powerful gaming computer, but as I explored motherboards, processors, RAM, and graphics boards, I realized that my plans had changed. I wanted to be part of the computer world, both from the hardware and the software side. I am proud to say that I want to become a Computer Software Engineer. I am in my junior year at Frederick Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center with a 3.9 GPA. I have received my Python certification in my Game Programming Class. I am planning to apply to universities with vital engineering programs. My goal is to attend M.I.T., I.I.T., or Caltech.
What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
I aspired to have my own apps on the app store. I have been ideating a lot of different productivity and utility apps that I can really make but then I lacked complete knowledge of it. Digital Scholars was a blessing and a helpful stepping stone for me. I really wanted to learn how to develop an app from scratch and Digital scholars provided the platform for it. As I went through the program, I not only got an understanding of the development process but also got a few of my fundamentals cleared that would help me in bringing my ideas to life.
From this program, I am really looking to further enhance my knowledge, experiences and in turn help the program to be able to bring its own ideas/ initiatives to life.
P.S. What I never knew but realized the importance was the Friday industry experts - they were really helpful to visualize and understand what the real world has for me as well as what I should be prepared with. Just as what Digital Scholars exposed me to app development + real life experts discussion, I am hoping that this program again, helps me to enhance my experience further.

Programming has always been a hobby and passion of mine. I got hooked onto programming when I was in elementary school. I would program for every "Genius Hour" (an hour a week where we would do something we wanted to do) and present to the rest of the class. Teachers would recognize it and that only fueled my passion further to continue to delve deeper into self learning software development. Originally, I started with Python but I soon taught myself several other languages (Java, JavaScript, React, Lua, and a bit of C and C++). My passion for programming has only grown every single year.
While I have taken all available computer subjects in high school, I am also practicing and ensuring that my understanding is accurate through teaching.
In my freshman year of high school, I volunteered at CodeNinja and helped elementary school students with various robotics projects. Earlier in my junior year, I decided I could test my knowledge of programming by tutoring kids myself. I started my own volunteer based tutoring classes, ezCODE, wherein I shared my knowledge with Middle schoolers and Seniors for free. I actively am a tutor at Codinu and Stemshala - both local computer classes.
I aspire to follow my passion and as such, am looking to graduate in the field of computer science either as a data scientist or software developer.

What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
I love creating and solving puzzles, which is how I knew that computer science would be the perfect major for me. Even outside of the program, I have high motivation for learning more about software engineering as I would spend my free time learning about a variety of technological topics that interest me, such as cloud computing or software design. I've worked with android studio code very briefly before for a class, but never got a chance to design an application myself. I wanted to use my creativity and ideas to create an innovative and useful application where it would be very beneficial for people around me. This program was an opportunity for me to showcase my creativity and gain exposure to another language that I did not have a chance to work with during my first year at college. I have many more possible app startup ideas that I would love to work on, so this was the perfect introductory program to possibly help me get started on an IOS career path. I want to be able to bring my imaginations to reality and make real changes step by step.

I am currently a sophomore enrolled in a Bachelor’s program for computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a minor in business. I have ambitious dreams of becoming a software engineer and my dream job is to work at Pinterest. Aside from just loving the app itself, Pinterest seems to really focus on the work-life balance as well as the mental health of their employees, as they offer free therapy and unlimited PTO. These are both values that I highly prioritize. With my business minor, I hope to invest in real estate and possibly start my own business in the future. I'm an overachiever and learning is something that I never want to stop doing. I would also love to serve as a role model or mentor for students younger than me, especially students who are females, because when I was younger, I always wished that there could be someone I could look up to for guidance on a STEM path like this.
What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
My motivating factor in this program is to launch my app on the app store, last year i never got a chance to actually see my app develop so this year i have a chip on my shoulder to go in and finish what i started. This opportunity is very important to me and i’m really sincere about coding i feel like it will definitely be a benefit in my life, especially for the company.
The modern life is changing every second of the day and technology is improving right along with it as well, I’m thankful to be alive to witness everything happen right in front of me and i will love to help the cause the best way i can by bringing all of my capabilities to the program to help to improve the future of coding.

My career goals in life is to build a industry to help bring value to my community and to inspire the youth for the next generations to come with my philosophy on life, I am not my art my art is me. Im 19 years old and my work focuses on creating unique art pieces inspired by my city. Even though the world may have a different view on detroit. I see the beauty in the culture and the community. My work is bigger than me and i want people to see me as more than a fashion designer but an artist. I like to explore the depths of my creativity by pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. What i hope to communicate through my art is the importance of staying true to yourself. there no such thing as being perfect, all your imperfections are what make you unique.
What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
My main motivating factor for being in the program is my passion for computer science. Although I am not a computer science major, I truly believe that I am capable of learning how to program and create more advanced programs that can eventually enable me to create an application. By enrolling myself in Everyone Can Code, I was able to assert the fact that I am capable of coding and my major does not define me. I want to be able to combine my current major, linguistics, and computer science to eventually work in the field of machine translation and improve the current translation and interpretation apps in the market. By enrolling myself in this program, I hope to learn to create apps in the iOS and someday achieve my goal of making translation apps better.
Please describe your education and/or career goals.
I am currently a fourth-year linguistics student, and I am minoring in computer science. I was initially planning to be an ESL teacher but as I took more linguistics courses I became very interested in the field of computational linguistics, specifically machine translation. When I officially took a course on language and technology, I realized that was something I wanted to learn more about, hence I decided to pursue a computer science major. I am interested in computational linguistics because I want to improve machine translation. Translation is often bad for minority languages, and it often focuses too much on a specific group of languages hence a lot of languages are often underrepresented in translation services. My goal is to minimize the divide in translation applications and make sure lesser used languages have the same resources as the major ones.
What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
I have always been motivated to volunteer and tackle issues faced by my community. More specifically, I have put a lot of effort into providing more accessible mentorship and resources to first-generation students to assist them throughout their educational journeys. As a first-generation student, I relate and understand the challenges faced when one does not have guidance near them. With this in mind, I created a program in my community that would help provide these resources; however, I reached a plateau after connecting with over 100 students. This program demonstrated the necessity of a place with resources for first-generation students. Thus, I continued my search for a way to connect with more students. Once, I dived into computer science courses I learned of the opportunity applications can have to reach large audiences. Thus, I have focused on improving my coding skill set to continue to bring awareness to this issue and reach larger audiences. The Everyone Can Code Chicago program will provide me the opportunity to create an app and make it accessible to students who wish for guidance in their educational journeys.
Please describe your education and/or career goals.
I am a computer science major at the University of Illinois Chicago with a concentration in software engineering. Currently, I am exploring different paths in this field such as app development, web development, and data science. An interest of mine is Artificial Intelligence and its applications. This interest starts from the implementation of AI into technology like autonomous cars to its implementation to combat climate change. Future wise, I aim to complete my bachelors and masters in computer science and obtain a software engineering position. As I continue to pursue computer science, I realized I would have loved taking a computer science course in middle school if I had the opportunity. After three years of taking more challenging computer science courses, I continue to see fewer Latinos in my classes. I have learned through this progress that anyone is able to program and that more opportunities need to be provided to ethnic minorities. With the experience I will obtain, I aspire to provide more computer science resources in my community. Additionally, I wish to become a role model for girls interested in computer science and encourage them to continue pursuing their passions.
What is your motivating factor for being in the program?
My motivating factor for this program is that I want this to be my future career. I noticed how motivated I felt when I started the past program, not only with the program but even in my everyday life. Another motivation I have is the fact that I want to give my mother a comfortable life and I know that I wont earn as much as I wish to but it will bring me closer to my goal of being able to give my mother everything she deserves and for her to be able to rely on me and that makes me happy because of everything she has done for me and my siblings.
Please describe your education and/or career goals.
I am currently on my freshman year of college i am attending Richard J Daley community college i will be trying to get an associates in CIS. My goal for the future have definitely change from 2 years ago when i wanted to become a therapist. As I've said before I had no prior coding experience before this past program but now I know this is something I definitely want to work on. After finishing college I will look for jobs and save up money in case I feel it is necessary that I expand my knowledge and get an even better certificate.
