  1. A tight title race in Turkeypublished at 15:56 27 May

The 2023/24 Turkish Super Lig season came to an end on Sunday, where Galatasaray edged out Fenerbahce to win the title by three points.

While Galatasaray finished top of the pile with 102 points to claim the title, Fenerbahce's monstrous total of 99 points would have won the league in virtually any other division.

If Arsenal had been feeling hard done by after missing out on winning the title on the final day of the season, spare a thought to those of a Fenerbahce persuasion.

Former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick will "suffer" when he takes over at Barcelona because of the challenges he will face, warns former boss Xavi.

The 44-year-old, who had been contracted until 2025, was informed of the club's decision to sack him last week, with Flick set to take over next season.

"He [Flick] will suffer, this is a very complicated place," Xavi said.

"He should know that he has a tough situation because Barca is a challenging club but on top of that it is in an adverse economic situation. It will not be an easy task."

The Barcelona legend pointed out that while he did not agree with his departure, he accepted that the club was bigger.

"It is not for me to say the reasons or the motives. I think it is up to the president to say them," he added.

"I had no choice but to accept it. It doesn't matter if I agree with the arguments.

"I'm not leaving with a sense of relief because we wanted to continue. These are decisions made by the club. We understood and respected that, but we thought it wasn't over."

One of the side issues about any decision to dismiss Erik ten Hag will be his compensation.

Saturday’s FA Cup win means United will have to pay Ten Hag more to remove him as they have qualified for the Europa League.

Obviously the club will generate more from the minimum eight first phase games - United will be one of nine teams with the highest seeding.

However, a managerial compensation payment is an immediate expense. And United already have limited scope for spending without selling players.

Chelsea will continue their partnership with Infinite Athlete amid talks to decide the front-of-shirt sponsor for next season.

An ambiguous post on social media seemed to declare the end of the seven-year arrangement with Infinite Athlete but was swiftly deleted.

Infinite Athlete, a sports technology company, have confirmed they will continue as front-of-shirt sponsor into pre-season.

Talks are ongoing to decide whether they continue into the 2024-25 season or move onto the less visible but less costly sleeve sponsor position.

Much will depend on whether Chelsea can find alternative big-ticket sponsors, having held talks with Saudi airline Riyadh Air.

Infinite Athlete reportedly paid around £40million to sponsor Chelsea last season.

Manchester United co-chair Joel Glazer and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe are leading the club’s end of season review that will determine whether Erik ten Hag remains in his job.

There will be input from technical director Jason Wilcox and United director Sir Dave Brailsford.

Interestingly, in 2022 ECB cricket chief Rob Key explained what his organisation had learned from including Brailsford in their own review.

“One of the things he spoke about was that it's not just about winning, it's actually about the style, the brand and the way you go about it and carry yourself as a team.”

So, those are the factors United will presumably look for in their own team.

As a kid that grew up in the 90’s, the Premier League is looking very old school now with Ipswich back in. For some reason I remember the super shiny Ipswich team badge sticker for my Premier League sticker book. Feeling very nostalgic coming into next season.

    Tom, Laugharne

Ipswich will finish the highest out of the three promoted teams. The manager will be backed with transfers for sure, and the mentality of that group of players is incredible, and they will be determined to prove they deserve to be in the Premier League.

  8. Kieran McKenna profiledpublished at 15:22 27 May

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has been heavily touted as being the next manager of either Chelsea, Manchester United or Brighton in recent weeks.

Having previously spent five years at Old Trafford, working as the club's under-18s manager and then assistant manager under Jose Mourinho and later, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In McKenna's two full seasons with Ipswich, he has won back-to-back promotions, taking the Tractor Boys from League One to the Premier League.

Chelsea have now ruled out McKenna as a potential option, but that could open the door for United and Brighton.

It is understood that McKenna is likely to turn down the offer of a new deal at Portman Road, given the interest currently in him from elsewhere.

Three strong teams going up to the Premier League, although it remains to be seen how strong Ipswich will be without Kieran McKenna. All could stay up. Forest have to be favourites for relegation with Nuno Esprito Santo surely the first to be sacked.

  10. 'Potential points deduction situation'published at 15:09 27 May

    Leicester City

It is going to be an interesting situation for Leicester straight away when they come up because of the potential points deduction situation, the spending situation and what the manager is going to be allowed to bring in.

They went big last year but they might start 2024-25 off on minus numbers. If the manager does not get given certainties about what will happen, then Leicester will not need to worry about any signings... their problem will be finding a new manager.

That will be the first and foremost thing to happen at the football club so there is a lot to think about and a lot to decide - and quickly.

How important is it that Enzo Maresca stays at the club? From his side, I do not think it is that important because he will get another role given the job he has done at King Power Stadium.

Do you think the potential points deduction may impact Maresca's decision to move?

Maresca is a poor choice for Chelsea. They need a manager with experience in the Premier League. Championship experience is not relevant.

  14. Could the pupils turn on the master?published at 14:51 27 May

Of course, if Enzo Maresca wants a good example of how life can work out after leaving the Manchester City nest, then Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta provides a pretty good example.

Arteta served as Guardiola's assistant manager for three-and-a-half years between July 2016 and December 2019 before leaving for Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard has since turned Arsenal into Manchester City's closest challengers for the title.

Should Maresca be able to revive the fortunes at Stamford Bridge, then Guardiola could soon find himself in a three-way title race with two of his former assistants.

  16. Maresca latest to follow Guardiola's leadpublished at 14:41 27 May

Under the tutelage of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Enzo Maresca is among the latest of Guardiola's assistants to make it as a manager of their own accord.

Maresca spent the 2020-21 season in charge of City's under-21s and guided them to the Premier League 2 title.

He left the club in 2021 to manage Parma, but returned to City for the 2022-23 season and acted as an assistant to Guardiola for that campaign, leading to another Premier League title.

Maresca's exit to Leicester has proved to be an instant success, winning the Championship title and taking the Foxes back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

I was really disappointed that we let Pochettino go. But there we go… now that we need to get a replacement in, getting a Pep-acolyte seems a good idea (it’s worked for Arsenal with Arteta for sure!). Plus he has had experience coaching in the Premier League and he’s won the Championship, so if we end up with him, it’s not the end of the world. Plus he’s not Thomas “I play the most dull football ever” Frank!

    Gareth

I don’t think Maresca should leave. He has built a good attacking style of play at Leicester. He can take them to new heights. Chelsea need someone like Xavi to sort the mess out.

Enzo Maresca has an excellent record in charge of Leicester, winning 36 of his 53 games in all competitions, .

The Italian manager led Leicester to the Championship title with 97 points - point clear of second-placed Ipswich Town and seven clear of the play-off places.

He also helped the Foxes reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, which they lost 4-2 at Chelsea. His side battled back from two goals down to level, only to concede twice in the closing stages.
