A launch screen is displayed after an app’s launch instead of displaying a blank screen, this can decrease the sense of a long loading time.

How it works

Tapping on your app's launcher icon will open the app and display the launch screen temporarily while the app tries to fetch the information it needs to work. This gives the impression that it's fast and responsive. Once the app has this information, the launch screen will automatically close and you will arrive at your app's first screen.

Rules

  • The launch screen should only include your product's logo (including the BBC blocks) and a background colour or graphic.
  • The logo should always be placed in the centre of the screen.
  • The BBC blocks should be 24px in height and your product logo should be sized relatively.
  • The background and the logo should be exported as separate assets for developers.

Variations

  • Your product logo can appear stacked below or placed in-line with the BBC blocks.

  • The logo and background should be exported as separate assets.
  • The launch screen can be animated.

Note

Animations should only be used if it is appropriate for your BBC brand and if it does not impact heavily on the app's file size.

Pattern in action

This pattern is currently being used by the BBC Bitesize app and the BBC+ app, available here:

BBC Bitesize for iOS / BBC Bitesize for Android

BBC+ for iOS / BBC+ for Android
