  • Information about your device such as your device’s battery level, cellular status, and last known location, may be shared with your friend in the event something unexpected happens.
  • The contents of any information from your Check In session shared with your friend are end-to-end encrypted.
  • Apple retains limited personal data about your use of Check In, such as if you are currently active in a Check In session, for the length of a Check In session and 24 hours after.
  • Your destination and approximate arrival time will be shared with the friend when you start a destination session.

You can use Check In to interact with and share your journey with a friend. You can start a Check In session with your iPhone with iOS 17 or later. You and your Check In friend will both need to have enabled iMessage and be signed in with your own Apple ID and have two-factor authentication enabled.

Your destination and approximate arrival time will be shared with your friend when you start a destination session. Your friend will be sent an automatic notification informing them when your device arrives at your destination or when your time duration ends and you confirm you are doing okay. You can also cancel a Check In at any time by tapping “End Check In” or “Stop Sharing”. When a Check In session is ended, your friend will automatically receive a notification, and information about your Check In session will be deleted.

While in a Check In session, information about your devices will be temporarily saved. Since Check In uses iMessage, this information is encrypted end to end. In the event something unexpected happens, such as your device failing to reach its destination or losing connectivity; or an emergency event, such as Crash Detection, Fall Detection; or you use any of the Emergency SOS features and you do not respond to prompts on your device, your friend will automatically be sent an iMessage letting them know. They will also be sent the option to download your Check In information about your device, including last-known battery level, cellular status, and location. You can also opt in to sharing the route your device took from your starting point to your device’s last-known location. Your device(s) will continue to monitor your progress and update your friend on your device status for up to 24 hours after the event. Your device and your friend’s device will keep your Check In information downloaded locally for up to seven days. In the event your friend has been notified in error, you can end the session by tapping End Check In, and let them know by contacting them in the Messages or Phone apps, for example.
