Department of Public Safety

Mission

At The City University of New York, the safety and security of our community is our top priority. The University takes a proactive approach to guarding the well-being of our community by providing a broad range of services that meet the needs and expectations of a safe community. Our goal is to maintain the safety and security of all people and property at the University. Most importantly, campus safety is a collective and collaborative effort, and at The City University of New York, personal safety is a partnership between public safety officers and the community whom we serve.

About

The City University of New York (CUNY) Department of Public Safety was formed under the leadership of University Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds in 1992. Since then, the Department of Public Safety has expanded its ranks to include: peace officers, sergeants, lieutenants, security directors and college security specialists.

Today, the CUNY Department of Public Safety is made up of 21 Campus Directors, 45 Campus Assistant Directors, 52 Campus Security Specialists, 125 Campus Public Safety Sergeants, 428 Public Safety Officers with New York State Peace Officer status and approximately 392 Campus Security Assistants.

CUNY Public Safety personnel have diligently served the City University of New York through historical events, such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and global pandemic COVID-19 to create a safe place for student, faculty and employees within the CUNY system.
