Change the language of your uploaded video

It’s not possible to change the language of a video that you didn’t upload. Learn how to check for available captions when watching videos in different languages.

The video language setting is a feature used to help YouTube and contributors understand the original language of your video. This feature helps when adding subtitles and captions to YouTube videos. It’s also used to help viewers find videos in their language.

Change video language

You can change the language of your uploaded video if it's been incorrectly set.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Content.
  3. Click a video’s thumbnail.
  4. Check that the intended language is listed in the Subtitles tab. Click ADD LANGUAGE to add the relevant language for “Subtitles” and “Title and description”.
  5. Go to Details tab.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click SHOW MORE.
  7. Choose the intended “Video language” and “Title and description language” from the Language and captions certification section and Save.
Note: If you change the setting for the original language of your video, the future translated subtitles will use the new language as the source for translations. Your published and draft subtitles and closed captions won't be affected.
