Tips for creating inclusive content

Representation in media matters, in front of and behind the camera. It’s important to remember we all have unconscious bias. This bias can influence the individuals we choose to work with, topics we cover, and which perspectives we include. This video covers tips on how your YouTube channel can help foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Content: What topics are covered and which perspectives are included?

  • Directly talk about and debunk stereotypes associated with sensitive topics to make it easier for diverse audiences to engage with your content.
  • Check the diversity of the sources in your content to make sure you have insightful content to help you reach a broad range of viewers.
  • Educate yourself about varying and marginalized perspectives using YouTube. You can start by watching videos of new creators.

Onscreen: What do individuals see when they visit my channel?

  • Reach a diverse audience through cross-vertical and cross-cultural collaborations. For example, if you create learning content, consider collaborating with a health and beauty vlogger. Collaborating can help you to understand their perspectives and educate your audience.
  • Consider featuring creators who are “up and coming” and not just the creators who are already at the top of their field.
  • Identity markers overlap and intersect. Try to engage individuals who represent the various iterations of these intersections. For example, if you’re working with women, include representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, women of color, and women with accessibility needs.

Engagement: How do I support other creators?

  • If your channel references other creators or content, consider incorporating content from creators with diverse backgrounds.
  • Consider offering to mentor and give your time to new creators of all backgrounds.
  • Consider collaborating with creators who are part of key initiatives in fields, such as racial/gender equity. Also consider creators who are passionate advocates for topics that you can talk about.

Behind-the-camera: Who is on my team?

  • If you work with a team, think about how you can work with more diverse voices. It makes for a more enriching experience for everyone on the team and more interesting content.
  • As you plan your content, view it from the perspective of someone who may think differently from you. Are there any gaps that you should talk about or take note of?
