After you get your Google TV device, you need to set it up. There are currently 2 mobile-based setup experiences and one manual setup option. Only certain Google TV models offer the faster setup with your phone which doesn’t require an app download. Eventually, all newer devices will support faster setup.
What you need
Important: Some regions or manufacturers may have additional terms, conditions, or charges. Some features, services, or apps aren’t globally supported.
- A Google Account
- A Wi-Fi or ethernet connection
- A device with Google TV like the Google TV Streamer or a Google TV powered device or display
Get started
Important: If your Google TV device plugs into your TV, switch to the HDMI input your device is plugged into.
- Plug in and turn on your Google TV device.
- Check if your remote is paired with your device. Some new devices are already paired.
- To pair your remote: Press and hold the Back and Home buttons.
- For certain third-party devices: Follow the device manufacturer's on-screen instructions.
- To pair your remote: Press and hold the Back and Home buttons.
- Choose your language.
- To turn on the TalkBack accessibility feature, press and hold the Back and Down buttons for 3 seconds.
- Select your region.
- This option is only shown for certain devices.
- Depending on the QR code shown on the screen, follow the respective steps.
Faster setup with your phone
Important: Faster setup is available on Hisense’s 2025 U7 series and 2025 U8 series Google TV devices. It'll become available to all new devices over time.
- Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Scan the QR code on your TV.
- Tip: If an Android phone is nearby, your TV automatically shows a setup notification.
- Follow the instructions on your phone and TV.
Legacy setup with your phone

Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Download the latest version of the Google Home app
on Android or iOS.
- On your phone, open the Google Home app
.
- At the bottom, tap Devices
Add
Google Nest or partner device.
- Choose or add a home.
- Tap Scan code.
- Allow the app to use your phone's camera.
- Scan the QR code on your TV screen.
- Tip: It may take a few minutes for your phone and TV to connect.
- Follow the instructions on your phone and TV.
Manual setup with TV remote
Important: To complete manual setup, you need to type with your remote, which may take longer.
If you don’t want to use your phone or if you have issues with mobile-based onboarding, you can use your TV remote.
- On the QR code screen, press the Down arrow on your remote.
- Select Set up on TV instead or Manual setup.
- Follow the on-screen instructions on your TV.
Tip: If you have trouble with any of the set up options above, you might need to set up your Google TV device manually with your TV remote.
On your remote, press and hold the Back button until "Having Trouble" shows on your TV screen.
Troubleshooting
For the faster setup option, make sure your mobile device software is up to date:
- Android: Must have OS version 9.0 or higher
- iPhone: Must have iOS 14 or higher
- If you previously installed the Google TV app on your iPhone, make sure the app version is 3.19 or higher.
For connection issues:
- A WPA2-Enterprise network isn't supported.
- Certain Google TV devices require 5 GHz Wi-Fi network connections.
