EMBA Class of 2018 Selects Winners of Annual Teaching Awards

Professors Jeffrey Garten, Sonia Marciano, Gregory Licholai, and Todd Cort are the winners of the Yale School of Management’s 2017-18 MBA for Executives Teaching Awards.

Professors Jeffrey Garten, Sonia Marciano, Gregory Licholai, and Todd Cort are the winners of the Yale School of Management’s 2017-18 MBA for Executives Teaching Awards. Selected in a vote by the MBA for Executives Class of 2018, the professors received their awards at the program’s Commencement Dinner on May 20.

The students honored faculty in each of the MBA for Executives program’s three focus areas—healthcare, sustainability, and asset management—as well as recognizing advanced management teaching.

Gregory Licholai, lecturer in management, won the Healthcare Teaching Award. Licholai said he was honored and humbled to win the award. “The students taught me more than I could ever give them, and I’m incredibly impressed and grateful to have had to opportunity to get to know these future leaders who are going to change the world and help give back to God, country, and Yale SOM.”

Todd Cort, lecturer in sustainability, won the Sustainability Teaching Award. Cort holds a dual appointment at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (FES) and is the faculty co-director at Yale Center for Business and the Environment.

Saying he was honored and surprised by the recognition, Cort credited the individuals who assist him daily. “This is a recognition of the many, many people who help me bring these classes to bear each year, from students writing case studies, to the support team at SOM, to the pioneering work of CBEY, and my faculty mentors here at SOM and FES,” he said.

Cort also thanked his students: “It is just not possible to teach sustainability, or any other topic, without a group of students who are willing to engage, challenge, test, and progress,” he said. “So, this award is more of a reflection on the EMBA Class of 2018 than me.”

Jeffrey Garten, dean emeritus and Juan Trippe Professor in the Practice Emeritus of International Trade, Finance, and Business, won the Asset Management Teaching Award. “It is a great pleasure to tech EMBA students,” Garten said. “They demand the intellectual rigor that is required for all Yale courses, but they are also hungry for practical management insights that they can use right away in their careers.  I find that the challenge of delivering both makes the teaching experience particularly exciting.”

Sonia Marciano, lecturer in management, won the Advanced Management Teaching Award. Marciano said she was “incredibly honored” by the award. “I love teaching this course,” she said. “For me, the sessions went really quickly. The students made it so engaging and they should know that I am always an email away.”
